In all honesty, it sounds more complex than it is...

The first option is always to give the RB the ball on the run play.

Then if the read takes the run away, the QB then pulls the ball and transitions to his secondary read, which is typically a flat defender/outside linebacker.

Reads then work out from inside out or low to high on which receiver to throw the ball to.

If it is a trips set where there are 3 receivers to that side, options 2, 3, and 4 are those 3 receivers.

Option 5 is a checkdown to a crossing backside receiver on a slant or dig route.

Option 6 is for the QB to run the ball himself.

Rarely do you see an offense at the high school level of carrying it out past first 2 to 3 options. Most high school QBs will get the first read on the give/keep on the run play. Then their second read/option is the first receiver. After that, they typically tuck and run and never get to the rest of the options

Depending on the system...basically, there is a front side "gift throw". and if they do this, then you do that.

and...

The defender in conflict is the key. If he plays the run, the Qb throws the route that replaces him. The defender can be a LB or a S. But he HAS to be the run fitter that has a route to cover. He cant serve 2 masters.

There can be pre snap, post snap, numbers and leverage throws. Which all carry different rules.

Most HS programs that run RPOs throw gifts, numbers/ leverage, or post snaps. Not full drop back concept passes off runs.

Simple.

I know a little more than you think

After reading all the comments, it's obvious to me this Rankin guy - whoever he is - is clueless about choosing assistant coaches and building a winning staff and program.

I detect a tone of sarcasm........:)

Maybe Simbeck made a career decision in accepting a position working for Coach Rankin....Lots of successful HS Coaches are from that tree....Pretty good decision by Simbeck IMO

Yeah, working for Gary Rankin is a pretty good look on the resume.

This particular assistant has applied for pretty much every open head coaching job in the area over the last couple of years, and there was a lot of tension at Central.  One of those cases where it was pretty obvious that a move needed to be made from both sides and probably for the best.  And it's more than just "coaching".  As I understand it he was the right fit for the open teaching job in Chattanooga, too. The pieces of the puzzle need to all fit sometimes.

But that said, if anybody doesn't understand that Rankin is the head coach and that whoever the OC is will have to fit Gary's offensive philosophy and not the other way around hasn't seen a Gary Rankin coached team in a while.

You're correct about the sarcasm.  Every excuse in the world as to why Coach Rankin chose him, other than Mr. Rankin seeing something he liked about Simbeck's coaching. But again, maybe Coach Rankin is totally clueless about choosing assistants and building strong programs.... and should read the comments on here from the experts.

You seem a little sensitive to the topic.  maybe a little close to it??

Not close to it at all.   I'm not related to Mr. Simbeck or Mr. Rankin.  I'm merely defending Coach Rankin's decision and defer to his successes in choosing competent assistants, and his ability to see something in them he likes. Apparently my mistake was that I wasn't aware there were more competent people commenting on here with a resume that superseded Mr. Rankin's in coaching.

Now that they have been back from Spring Break, any news from Central on a new Offensive Coordinator?  Have they got someone on staff up for the job or are they looking outside the program

Haven't heard anything official,  but I was told it likely stays in house.

After doing some research I found out Mr. Simbeck was voted Region Offensive Coordinator of The Year two years in a row in 6A (McMinn County) and now in his 2nd year at Central he's honored as Region 2-5A Offensive Coach of The Year .  Hmmm... maybe this Rankin guy ain't so dumb after all.

    • The winds of change are blowing in Hartsville.     Will be an interesting follow.    Would go back to the 90s and turn black the clock!
    • Did he promise you a coordinator job or something if he ever got a head coaching job? He resigned? He was at the top of the dugout last night calling plays. I wonder if those 30+ parents would let him give their kids a ride. by the way the board meeting was last night and it was not mentioned. must have been at the work session earlier this week which is not public. must be trying to keep it quiet.  Since you know so much, how much is Robbie Atwood willing to pay Adam Cothron?  Didn't you slander Eden earlier on here? You also didn't know he was a faculty coach again so how much do you really know? Some people outside this county baffle me with their need to slander others.
    • He resigned smh, and have you ever heard of charged but not convicted. Some people in this county baffle me with their need to slander others. Have you asked any of the 30+ parents that signed a petition to get him reinstated at the board meeting this week how they feel about this? Just let it play out, at the end of the day the only people that will bring TC back are the ones that know what its about at its core.    People hate losing and they aren't used to it at TC. I for 1, and I'm sure others too, understand having a dip in talent and not being able to compete for a state title every year. But in the past, TC teams have outworked more talented teams, they didn't continuously lose the turnover battle, they didn't commit 8+ penalties in several games each season, and I believe several of the folks in town that want Blake out feel as if he is neglecting the history of the program. This is from a source that used to be extremely close to the program (not me lol), Blake gets out of school midday and the players show up and there is no practice plan or itinerary.  I also understand those that are on team Blake, when he has loads of talent, he wins. He does know football and he is a tremendous DC, and if the rumors are true then he will do great things. As for the board member issue, it is what it is, everyone that's true to the county know that and nothing has changed. I agree though that they should strive to make the facilities as good as we can. And as far as potential candidates, I agree there is very few options. West, Vetetoe (yes I know), and couple others that could have some interest. Whatever happens is massive for the program during a pivotal time before the next big wave of stars make their way through.
