I would be in favor of the TSSAA following the changes the NCAA made with kids transferring. Regardless of the reason, I do not think the kids should have to suffer by sitting out a year.

We can bad mouth Baylor all we want, but it sounds like they cleared everything with the TSSAA. As far as Sturgill goes, I cannot blame the kid or his parents for wanting to make a change. He will obviously get a great education and that program has a reputation for producing college wrestlers.

Having said that, I do think the TSSAA needs to take a strong look into the rules in place for private schools. With Baylor in particular, there's a huge difference in that program and say a Father Ryan or Cleveland. FR and Cleveland have great kids clubs, middle school programs, and develop their local talent. Of Baylor's starting 14 last year, I doubt many of them even came up through their middle school program (please correct me if I am wrong). The majority of their starters are not even from the Chattanooga area. This also begs the question, what in the world has happened to McCallie? They have the same resources Baylor does and they can't even wrestle a middle-tiered DII team like MBA within 40 points. With their facilities and resources, the state of that program is inexcusable.

I think the TSSAA should either A) say private schools can recruit freely and give scholarships/aid as they please so everyone in that division is on an even playing field or B) start to police it more strictly. Right now, it's simply not a fair system. Baylor having finalists in 11 of the 14 weight classes last year is proof of that. The fact Cleveland was able to beat Baylor last year though, speaks volumes about how impressive that program and its coaching is.

Maybe 2-3 kids on their team that went to Baylor MS. Dont recruit from all over them try and claim a TN state championship ha…. that’s a little embarrassing.

I think they are more focused on national success than state success. I would imagine most of the tournaments they will go to this year will be more difficult than the State Tournament.

How is Sturgill eligible to wrestle this year?  Didn’t he wrestle in TSSAA last season?  Baylor being the only school with dorms means they recruit from Canada Georgia New Mexico it’s not Tennessee wrestling.

Why are you hijacking this thread to ask this question. Start your own thread. But more importantly… don’t call these kids out by name and be negative towards them. Pick up the phone or do some research. Call the schools,  parents, or governing body… don’t just start picking on kids online!

LOL nobody is picking on the kid. Not one time did ANYBODY bash him or saying anything sideways about him. Come on now, at least attempt to be smarter than that.

Our issues are with the Baylor program and coaching staff.

Why?  Baylor is building a power program here in TN and it’s raising the level of wrestling in this state.

I am not going to disagree with you on the fact that Baylor is building a national power program in Tennessee.  The issues that many are having is that it is being done through the boarding school program which only a handful of schools in Tennessee are able to duplicate. It's one thing if a school is an open zoned public school or local private day school and builds a great program through their youth program, middle school program and those same kids matriculate onto the high school team.  What everyone is witnessing is a school that is currently going out every year and recruiting kids to fill their open weight classifications.  Let me make it clear that to the best of my knowledge Baylor is doing nothing illegal but the optics of how they are accomplishing success is not good.  McCallie has been doing the exact same thing in football and the other D2AAA schools are beginning to complain.  It's my understanding that Baylor won a state championship in baseball and only had two or three kids on the team from Tennessee.  Personally, I see the TSSAA reexamining the transfer rules for boarding schools sooner rather than later.

Scott they won 2 matches out of 7 at WNO. Yes in private school they have been very dominant but recently that hasn't been very hard to do in tennessee private school and the team they have this year can't be compared much to the teams they've had the past couple years.

Agree. After watching the wno. They may not be the best team in D2 (Father Ryan) and they would maybe get 3rd in either of the public school divisions.

It wasn’t as if a dual team went out and beat them 7-2. These were the best kids in the state from all across the state. Baylor still has to be the top team in d2 and would probably do well in d1 as well.

Baylor would dominate in a combined state tournament.  Even if all of their good wrestlers didn't win the state tournament, they would score so many points in the consolation rounds that they would blow everyone away.  One way to find out how good Baylor is would be for the public schools to petition the TSSAA to allow the individual state wrestling tournament to be a combined event.  We all know that this will never happen.

Help me out here. You say these are the best kids from across the state. Was there an all call out to wrestlers to put their name in the hat to be drawn out or challenge for a spot on these two teams? I’m not trying to be a smart azz about it but I don’t remember seeing it. There was only one girls match and it seems we missed a couple weights in the boys match.
