Hey…I don’t know about the accuracy of all of your extremely long post, but you are 100% wrong with your first statement about George.  You can believe that or not, but you’re wrong.

GovMan, Mr.Knowitall's take on GQ is probably the most laughable/ asinine statement ever posted on the CoachT board. The reason he left was because Maryville was down in talent? LOL. The next 3 years after GQ left MHS won 2 of 3 6A gold balls.

Comparing GQ to any other coach in Tennessee High School football is like comparing chess (GQ) to checkers. His winning percentage is the best in the history of high school football period, not just in TN. Admittedly there are some good checker players in the TSSAA high school ranks. He was the master of misdirection. Don't know how many throwback passes I've seen him burn people with over the years. I have seen GQ coached teams defeat some teams that I thought had better talent. Like the Central teams of the early 2000's with Zac Helton, Cassen Jackson and Lee Smith. The 2001 and 2002 Hillsboro teams, particularly the 2002 Hillsboro team that MHS trailed by 14 points numerous times and rallied to win on a double pass and a 2-point conversion and an onside kick recovery. Then the Rutherford county teams when the Rebels stepped up to the Super 32/ 6A. Smyrna, Riverdale, Blackman with Jennings, and Oakland twice were very talented. But we seemed to find a way 94% of the time.

I agree MHS is down now and will have to adjust and next year we may have a 9th grader at QB. Oakland simply has better players than any public school team in TN. now and Creasy does a good job in putting them in the best places to excel.

Additionally let me be the first to congratulate Alcoa on their next 3A championship in 2022.

WARNING:  Long Post

I said this the other night before JSamson decided to come after me for being some other dude.  I mean this as nicely as I can say it.  The “championship” ride is over at Maryville.

George Quarles knew that this was inevitable and that’s why he bounced when he did.  The moment Oakland hired 2A Kevin Creasy to come to Murfreesboro and run his 2A offense it was officially the beginning of the end of Maryville’s championship runs.  It’s grown so lopsided that Oakland has gotten to where they have to play Division II teams and out of state teams in order to test themselves because they flat out own Maryville right now.

Gary Rankin did the same thing when he left Riverdale after 2005.  Even when Riverdale had countless college prospects and brought in Ron Aydelott to continue the machine.  When adversity hit the Warrior Nation made Aydelott the scapegoat and since then Riverdale hasn’t been the same.  If Rankin had stayed at Riverdale he would have been part of the downfall of Warriors football.  If Quarles had stayed at Maryville he too would have been part of the downfall of Rebels football.  Oh sure they would have beaten the Science Hill’s of the state and they would beat Alcoa, although it wouldn’t be as lopsided as in years past, but in those nut cutting games against better teams from Alcoa, Knoxville West, and Oakland he would have taken an L just like Hunt is doing nowadays.

Maryville today is experiencing what Riverdale went through 15 years ago.  Eventually it will become the new norm and people will learn to accept it.  It’s not a knock.  Maryville is still great.  They are still going to win 10 or so games every year and be a Top 5 team.  If you think it’s 2000-2007 Maryville though you desperately need a reality check.

In the meantime Alcoa’s going to need to build more trophy cases because they are going to really start to put a gap on Maryville as it relates to number of state championships won.  The part that is going to sting the most about it is that their head Coach leading the charge will be a Maryville grad.  Eventually this will take its toll and the players that Maryville “currently get” will become the players that Maryville “used to get” because they’ll all be going to Alcoa to win championships.

Ask Oakland & Riverdale if that isn’t how it works.  Again I’m not trying to be a “Debbie Downer” and I’m not dogging on Maryville football.  What Quarles did at Maryville was one of the most amazing feats of its time.  It’s what Creasy is doing today at Oakland.  Nix will only continue to build and expand on what Reid & Rankin started and established at Alcoa.

I will be at the state championships next weekend if anyone wants to stop by and have a conversation.  Great year Maryville.  Good Luck in the title games Oakland & Alcoa.

I wish you had provided a BS warning also . This is a perfect example of someone from the other side of the State thinking they know what’s going on from a few rumors from their Buddies. Sure you don’t want to knock Maryville, funny how you always seem to though .
Having talent to win in 3A is quite a bit different than winning in 6A … if Alcoa is so dominant and Superior and only getting more dominating then surely they will at least step up to 4A so they can play a few teams that might make it a little exciting. So Alcoa beat Maryville for like the 4th time in 20 years and it’s all over for Maryville… myself, I’d rather win a Championship every few years against the State’s BEST than every year against … well not equally as talented teams . Not that I’m “ Knocking “ on your team or anything ol Buddy! LoL

Here is the issue in a nutshell.  Maryville is a well coached football team, but they don't have the athletes that they once had.  I believe that coach Hunt had a very good game plan, unfortunately athleticism took over.  I would compare him at this stage in his career as being a "Tommy McDaniel" type of coach.  He is pretty good but not elite.

I would add that anyone predicting the demise Maryville football is a bit premature, and quite possibly doing a little wishful thinking.  I would caution those folks to pump the brakes on that.   Whoa Nelly!  Not so fast my friend.  They will get back to work in Jan. and will be just fine next year.

Could you elaborate on what "just fine" will look like next year?

Very interesting comments and their always great to hear from someone else's prospective. We all have speculated why GQ just up and left by surprise. I was always told by someone in the know when Gaylor and Ellis ever decided to leave that would mark the end of an era for Maryville High Football and GQ would know it was his time to go as well. The bad loss to Oakland in his last game along with the major drop off at the junior high that went from 65 man teams to 30 give or take a player for a couple of years could have possibly led to believe the pipeline was running dry, I know I sure did. Had it not been for the three that left Alcoa and came to Maryville plus the one from William Blount I'm positive we would have not won it in 2019. We were in the game with Oakland last year and one bad call on a fumble that wasn't changed that game in it's tracks and would have played out who had the ball last would have won so Oakland being superior to us doesn't play into the cards at all. There were a lot of things that fell onto this years team that actually should have been under close eye's last year and the biggest was the qb position. They had 2 qb's for the entire team with close to 90 players and one transferred that didn't come up through the system and what the kid learned from Shad done so much irreversible damage to change in one season. Maryville paid dearly by not being focused last year on key positions that would be open this year. I saw this in a 7 on 7 scrimmage with Anderson County that the receivers couldn't break away on routes and the defensive backs still wanted to be at the swimming pool with their girlfriends. We started out the year in the jamboree letting William Blount have false aspirations they were actually a decent football team. Then the Alcoa game told the truth on everything I had prewarned everyone in my circle on. Me and the barber agreed who and what would cost us that game and hit it right on the nose. The Cleveland game actually hurt me personally worse than any loss at all this year. The other three loses I expected. Now losing 9 of 11 defensive starters along with the entire offensive line plus a handful of receivers, 5-5 is a real possibility. This will be the most important winter in the past 25 years at MHS concerning the football program and every coach and player up there have their work cut out for them.

I think you may be stretching your numbers in order to make your case " Now losing 9 of 11 defensive starters along with the entire offensive line plus a handful of receivers, 5-5 is a real possibility."

With you being the superfan, surprised you didn't know that the Entire season, Maryville started on offensive line,  a sophmore at Left Tackle and a Junior at Right Tackle.

Also, you say "now losing 9 of 11 on defense" - try 10, only 1 Junior started (at Defensive back), the rest were seniors.  But interesting fact, of the 10 senior starters on defense, 6 of them were 1st time starters (4 returning starters on Def).  So Rebels will have 10 new starters on defense vs 6 this past year.  Don't think that quite justifies a 5-5 season.

I see both sides of it, we all know Oakland is the standard right now in 6a and it would have taken a herculean effort from Maryville to pull off the upset.

From the Oakland side of it as mtf stated the real talent of this Oakland team is with the sophomores so this is the year to kind of catch Oakland off guard and they're leaps and bound ahead of the pack. This Oakland train doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon and last season with the patriots unblemished gauntlet schedule we all had a fun debate with no right or wrong answers if last years Oakland was the best team the state of tn had ever seen.

From the Maryville side the sayers that are saying all is not lost, if we can just change 1 thing remove Oakland let's just say Oakland doesn't exist then that changes the whole narrative and perception on coach Hunt, we're all saying GQ left and coach Hunt didn't miss a beat, it's Maryville playing summit last year for the title, it's Maryville playing Brentwood the previous year. This is the only year there could be a real debate between Maryville vs Blackman and personally I don't know who wins that game

After watching Oakland play these teams the last two weeks at Ray Hughes stadium, I would have to give the edge to Blackman.  Offensively they are better than Maryville but the Rebs get the nod over Blackman when it comes to defensive stops.  So why don't they schedule each other next year?  Tygard I assume wants to get better.  He needs to get his schedule as tough as possible if he wants improvement and no better way than a 1 and 1 with Maryville.  Fairly evenly matched teams.  I'd pay to see it.

I have no doubt that they will be back.  They need some retooling with the skilled positions.
