I’ve wondered that As well Lawny. But I believe that is the past. Cain enjoys life,  family and work. As a coach he was driven with a plan that connected every dot. I was on the administrator team that hired Coach. I forget that was a long time ago and Cain is a well rounded man who farms, outdoors man, major family man, realtor and Christian.

He could fool me though.

Sounds like he is enjoying his life.He was a great Coach.

They would both be formidable 5A foes for sure.      The last couple of years they could neither one beat Knox West, but who knows until you line it up and play the game

I don’t know about that one blazer.  I’ve seen Knox West in person the last three years (actually sponsored one of their flag football teams over the summers and know quite a few of their players and parents).  I think Greeneville could have beat them last year and three years ago with Gudger and company.  I don’t think they would have beat their team two years ago and might have been the best team to come out of Knoxville.

I know comparing scores isn’t the best indicator but they beat AC by 1 last year and lost to Alcoa by multiple TD’s.  Greeneville looked better against both of those common opponents.  West wasn’t suppose to win it all last year with how much they had lost off the team, the year prior they were a better and more dominant team.

This will be from an Oakland/Rutherford County perspective because that's where I went and played. But I went to ETSU and lived in JC for a little over six years. NET is definitely like a second home to me so I definitely like to check up on those Science Hill and DB boys and like to see them succeed. But boy I don't think it gets talked about enough how difficult of a path 6A East Tennessee teams have. Knowing to get a ring you will have to probably play someone in your region again, Maryville or someone in that region, Murfreesboro/Rutherford county (Most likely Oakland), and then if you manage to do that you get to meet Whitehaven, Houston, Germantown, or Williamson County. I truly think 6A east Tennessee bracket is one of the tougher playoff paths in America, considering it includes 2 of 3 deepest public school regions in the state, one of most winningest programs in the country, and a school that's nationally ranked half of the time this past decade. That's tough. And yet I do believe that both SH and DB can produce competitive teams every couple of years that can at least be the type of teams you don't want to see in the playoffs. But i think you all hit it on the nail about starting with the youth. I had a co worker who played ball at Science Hill and when I told him how we had workouts as a class and two-a-day practices, and 7 on 7s among other things at Oakland he thought I was speaking gibberish. They don't those types of things. I think SH and DB think they can produce athletes on the fly in high school but if you're waiting until they are sophomores it's too late considering the other great programs started their athletes young and the nature of 6A ball in Tennessee. When was the last time we had a 6A championship that didn't involve two teams with college level athletes everywhere or a solid team but with a great coach? I think SH and DB just seem to be behind the 8 ball. You need one or the other to compete at that level today. But there's enough athletes up there and no prominent private schools which should be the one advantage the Tri-cities have over everyone. They have to develop better as the state's population is growing, because it's only getting tougher. But it's not impossible. I'm rooting for SH and DB.....until they have to pay Oakland of course lol.

Good perspective about NET from a somewhat outsider.      There is one thing you may not know, Lakeway Christian Schools is supposedly opening up a new school near I-81/I-26 so it's right between DB & SH.     Not sure what that will mean for athletics, but they could easily get athletes from both schools, plus Boone (5A) & West Ridge (6A)

I remember hearing about it. Do you know the size of it? Sounds a bit around the size of a Grace Christian of Knoxville type school. If so, I don't think it would affect the big programs too much. MTCS in Murfreesboro (D2-A) barely affects the other big public schools in Rutherford. Personally, I'm not leaving SH, DB, or West Ridge unless you're either playing with the larger private schools or you can sell me that you can recruit all of the best athletes in the area and pretty much become a Tri-cities all star team. Boone, Crockett, Volunteer or any of the smaller schools maybe I'd consider. If you're goal is to get looked at by colleges, I would think it's best to stay at the 6A schools. But I think some kids just hear "Private School" and go just because it feels good to be recruited. I don't think it's wise though unless Lakeway has big plans.

Science Hill - brutal opening schedule (Elizabethton, Anderson County, Jefferson County, Union (Virginia), Maryville), my guess is maybe 2-3 but more likely 1-4.     The last 5 games will be 5-0 (William Blount, West Ridge, Morristown East, Boone, DB).    Interesting to note that SH supposedly has a very high powered offense this season so we'll see.    It has been my observation over past years that while SH may have a great combo of athletes from time to time, they play with little discipline and in the end that is going to bite you.     But who knows, perhaps this is the year when it all comes together.

DB - 1st half of the schedule is nowhere near as hard as the Hill (Farragut, Greeneville, West Ridge, Jefferson County, Asheville).  2nd half of the sched is fairly balanced as well (Morristown East, Elizabethton, William Blount, Crockett, Science Hill).

Playoffs - I would look for one of these to exit in the 1st round and the other to exit in the 2nd round.

In a nutshell, Science Hill's goal starting every season is beating DB. Dobyns-Bennetts goal each year is showing off their fancy stadium and that big band. After the Toppers beat DB they'll lose interest = 1'st. round loss. As for DB I honestly believe they'd be fine with not even being in the playoffs. Anything past 10 games is just extra work for the "so called" coaching staff.
