McKenzie @ Huntingdon - Week 1 Showdown

Recommended Posts

I would hold off before I start crowning teams as state champions and going undefeated before a game is ever played.  Takes more than talent to win those. I know Mckenzie  lost some very good kids  last year that had tremendous toughness, work ethic and leadership qualities that led that team. If you don't have players that step up and fill those roles and lead by example then all you have is a really good group of individuals doing their own thing not putting the team first. Not saying they don't have those type kids-  just saying it is unknown for both of these teams right now.  Both definitely have the potential though.

Far as this game though - I say whichever team is closer to full strength will win. Already hearing players from both teams maybe out to start the season  for various reasons.

I will have to disagree, I don’t think if they lose the first game of his first season to a really good Huntingdon team that he will or should have any heat on him.  He is a great hire for McKenzie and they are the favorites to win 1A regardless of how they do vs Huntingdon.  Even if they lose week 1 they will still go 9-1 in regular season.

Agree with you 100%. Yes, it’s Huntingdon and both sides want this win. But more importantly, I think it is great week 1 measuring stick. And if you drop it, you flush it and move on.  I know Comer liked having it first and I bet Swenson does as well.

I put zero stock in that award. Farrior kid from SP should have been 2023 Mr. Football .  Deandre Kelly should have won it in 2021.

Maybe so but I put a lot of stock in Surber being the most important player for any team in 1A.  He is that good and that valuable to McKenzie.

I agree and think both are the favorites in 1A and 2A this season.  Mustangs probably need this game a little more to set the tone for the season.  I think the winner of this game goes 10-0 in regular season and the loser will be 9-1.

It would be very satisfying, if McKenzie goes 9-1/10-0 playing at Huntingdon, at Dresden, at Giles Co, and against a Chester Co. team loaded with talent.

If Hodge gets beat by Huntingdon they will be ready to run him out of town. Mckenzie will come in with a huge target on their back. He went from a team in my opinion that was the better team last year in Dresden to the team that beat them.

I did not see the first game last year in which Dresden won easily. But I was at the second one. I was impressed by how Dresden came out and bullied McKenzie physically running the ball right at them. McKenzie shot themselves in the foot a few times on offense and you guys go into the half up 16-0. However McKenzie made adjustments defensively and shut down the rushing attack of Dresden. Combined that with the Rebel passing game clicking in the second half and Dresden was finished. I thought McKenzie looked the much better  team in the second half and Dresden the first.

The game is really irrelevant other than its two good teams playing.  Your bias is showing

This is my last ride I’ve had three sons to play for the Mustangs. My youngest will be a senior this year #21. Maybe the fastest and most athletic of the three. Used to have some good debates with Duckman back when my two oldest played. Hope to go out with a bang this year.

Who are the teams to beat in your neck of the woods in Single A and Double AA?? South Pittsburg going to be good again??

    • Looks like our first three games will be some tough competition. We are predicted to win against 1A Chattanooga prep and expected to lose the next two games against 5A East Hamilton and 2A York Institute. I've looked at Yorks schedule and they will have had the hardest schedule I've seen in a while for a 2A team. They will either be battle tested end of season or playing the water boys due to everyone being hurt.  The Chattanooga Prep team played Boyd Buchanan much closer than I would have thought on last years schedule, so I expect that to be a hard game for us as well if we can pull it out.  These predictions are Massey's and not mine just a fyi.
    • Age wise correct! His som  will play somewhere small and maybe he will just wanna be a dad!Caine puts in more time than mist may wanna re charge for few years!
    • I think you are right on the money with these predictions.  You seem well versed in West TN high school football.  I’d like to hear your predictions and thoughts for 1A region 6 if you would be willing.
    • I have heard another one after that is possible.  Still though it’s hard to see any school system justify spending money on a field upgrade for an existing school while building a new school. Going to turf and the stadium upgrade would be a large investment. I looked it up and turf starts at 250K and up.
    • 1 new HS schefuled in 3-4 years. On the White County side of Cookeville. It will essentially split the Cookeville HS school population from 2200 to two schools of 1100. Probably like two 1250 by the time they build it.
