Is Westview really overrated?

Guys the only reason that Alcoa was able to play that defensive scheme is because they are Alcoa and they have 3 guys on their defensive line who are able to whip tail.

if the west TN schools like Dyersburg and Covington try to use that scheme to slow down Westview offensively they will score 40-50 points easily.

Alcoa is able to do stuff like that because their players are a different breed of an animal.  You can’t do what they do and expect the same results.

They have put up some high scores and from lineage, their QB has to be legit. Are the teams they have played really that bad or is Westview scoring on all cylinders and with second and third teams? Seems Covington is going to be their toughest challenge during the regular season. However, just how good is Covington? I noticed they were not able to play their game tonight and it looks like that would have been a good match up.

Whoever comes out of the West has to get past East Nashville to get to Alcoa and EN is typically very good. If Westview is that good, can they take Alcoa in the championship?

Nope

Do I think Westview can beat Alcoa this year? No. Way better shot next year, Chargers will be much more experienced. Look at Alcoa the last 15+ years. 1 team has out alcoa'd them. CPA. You have a better chance to go over the top of them like CAK did for those 2 seasons. This westview bunch reminds me quite a bit of those CAK teams

As an Alcoa pure blood i try to be as positive on both sides of the playing field. Yes you could easily tell Graham is and will be a very good to great QB. Very athletic with a keen eye and just plain good football savvy. And I see him bringing a golden ball back to Westview but I noticed someone say something about the competition in West Tennessee not nearly being as good as East Tennessee. I know there are really good basketball programs in West TN. Why not football?

In all of my years, it seems that there is a transference of power every couple of years between the three areas (East, Middle and West). Now that privates are split, it is more prevalent to see. However, having six classifications effectively nulls that. It does rotate but, where you are sitting and, perhaps, more influential is where you originate from, Maryville and Alcoa fans will not see this.

There are some good programs in the west, but they're small. There's a different community dynamic west of Nashville than east of Nashville. Population isn't as dense to begin with, and towns (cities if you like) are more rural and smaller. Outside of the Memphis area, there are very few 4A schools several 3A, hardly any 5A, and zero 6A schools. By far most are 1A and 2A schools. You usually have 2 or maybe 3 in the smaller classifications from the east who have a legit claim to being the best in class, and maybe double that amount in the west. For example, Marion, Westmorland, and ER, were the class of the east while the west had one region with 5-6 teams with a good chance to beat the other on any given night. Biggest cities west of the Tn. River are Jackson, Savannah, Paris, Dyersburg, Martin, Lexington, Covington, Union City, Selmer, Bolivar, and several similar sized as the last few on the list. Paris has a 5A, Jackson has one 4A, one 3A, and some 2A's...Savannah and Lexington have a 4A, and the rest are all smaller. Dyer Co. is the rare large rural school without a large town to draw from. Middle and east have several small areas with numerous 5A and 6A schools in close proximity...nowhere in the west even resembles that outside the Memphis area.

Maybe our West Tennessee schools have a different emphasis on football than you find in other parts of the state. As a long time Covington fan (and a 1962 graduate of its predecessor, Byars-Hall High) I can only recall a handful of players who transferred to Covington to play football. There’s a saying in football “you dance with who brung you”. Our philosophy in Covington is “you play with who you raised”. You can watch the Middle School program here and see the future high school players coming along. I have a grandson who just played his 6th grade year in the system.

I personally am proud of what Covington has accomplished in football using this system. True, we have never won a Gold Ball, but we have played for it 6 times in our history and have 6 Silver Balls in our trophy case. If you read the Commercial Appeal article I posted about our 3A Mr. Football this year, Skylan Smith, one fact jumps out at you. Skylan is a heritage player at Covington. His cousins, Darron White and Michael Grandberry, were standout players for Covington in the past. That’s the kind of longevity we are building in Covington. It’s just my own preference, but I like this approach rather than fielding a team of “hired guns” who are there for a short time and then leave the community.

Maybe this explains the difference between us and the rest of the state.

Let me begin by stating that I agree with everything you said, and that win or lose, I'm very proud of our guys that stick with us through thick and thin...now let me say that I'm not shortsighted to the point that I (and our community, I'm sure) wouldn't  welcome in any and all who could elevate our program, provided that they show a little pride and attachment to our school and community. We don't go out and use whatever tactics are available to attract players like some apparently do, but if they come willing to be "one of us", they'd be taken in as one of us. To use Tyrone's signature...jus' keepin' it real!

Covington is the GOLD STANDARD for West TN Football and Baseball. Since 1999

    • "You gotta have heart" is on every Gibson County Logo around. They are not playing with effort right now. Body language has been bad a lot of the year. Don't know what is going on but this team is not focussed right now and hadn't been for most of the year. I know they can play better because they were focussed this summer and beat some really good teams bad. If we play with the same effort we did tonight against South Gibson, they will embarrass us by 25 points at home. I know the coaches have challenged this group all year and are as baffled about this as the fans are. If I was a JV player on Gibson County right now, I would be ready to roll because I would imagine the coaches are running out of patience with the lack of effort with the starters.
    • Yeah the player from South Fulton may be a Miss Basketball Finalist. She is a really good player. Simms is a step or two faster this year too. Westview just is playing really good right now. Their offense is in sync right now. Good win for Westview. Glad it didn't count as two wins. Very embarrassing loss for our fans and coaches.
    • I’d like to know Camden FG percentage tonight. The Melton kid is impressive and scored at will. Huntingdon has to make some adjustments during games.
    • Camden is good and handled Huntingdon tonight but they have struggled getting over the hump the last 3 or 4 years with State tourney caliber players.
    • Had a team drop out.   We have room for one more team.  Great weekend of fastpitch softball.
