There's a middle school team in an urban area that made it to the middle school state tournament.

If a high school in the same "urban area" with other high school teams across that city, send players to that middle school team to give them "words of advice" to perform at that middle school state tournament, is that a recruiting violation? Because  in my assumption, it could sway a decision from playing basketball at one high school, to now potentially changing to that high school that send players to the middle school?

Keep in mind: this is the same high school that has/had (not sure if it's still going on) an assistant basketball coach signed up to become a basketball official, so that he can "officiate" middle school games throughout the area on Monday/Thursday nights.

Curious to hear everybody thoughts...

Probably not a good idea to spend too much time around these players. I know around here there are some good Jr. High Teams and don't think towns would like it if different HS players from other schools were hanging around.

I definitely agree it could sway a decision, but I don't think that is a violation. I know high schoolers aren't allowed to practice with middle schools. Seems like a lot of gray area to me, The coach sent them or did the coach at the middle school invite them?

I know several High School coaches that officiate middle school ball. One happens to be a TSSAA board of controls member.

Hmm. . . I bet I know what “urban” area you’re referring to! Just call’em out! Lol

If I’m a parent, I’m sending my kid where they can succeed! We have several schools in the Nashville area, in basketball and football. Parents tend to send their kids where they have a better chance to grow. It’s a sacrifice for the parents, but in a lot of cases, it’s worth it. I’m not sending mine to their zoned school. No way! Lol

Also, is this assistant coach recruiting while he’s working as a ref?

This is good. Or go back to having the meeting so the coaches and administration can see the draw happen. It's hard to accuse and assume if you're actually there to see what is happening.

Bingo

“Urban Area” huh? lol say what & who you are referring to! I don’t think a ref can dictate anything! The school does! If a school is winning & my kid can help why not go there? I will put my kid in the best position I possibly can as a parent! And look around Jackson or is it just certain areas you call an  “urban area” but it’s multiple coaches or assistant coaches on the TSSAA officials payroll buddy! Be direct!

I mean is it any proof? Or is you mad because that “urban” school is helping the one school he obviously doesn’t like is winning!

Lol they sounding like a hater that kid keep getting that tail tapped by the same team and probably ain't no good anyway! People kill me with this stuff! SMH! Help your kid out and put them in the best situation to succeed! As a parent, it takes some sacrifice! Figure out a way to help them rather than hating on the other team!

All I can say is the players of the high school team were at the middle school. I'm sure this was a joint agreement by the high school and the central office of the school district to do this. The school district has their favorite high school (or golden child) and it just happens to be this high school.

I don't have a big issue with coaches becoming officials as well, as long as it is another sport. If McKenzie has an assistant football coach officiating a Huntingdon Middle School game in football, I'm sure Huntingdon fans would have an uproar about it, whether if that coach is actively recruiting during dead ball, pre/post game. Unethical hasn't gone away.

Unethical? I don't see that. There's nothing in TSSAA bylaws or on officials registration that says you can't officiate the sport you coach. I actually think that makes more sense as far as rules and knowledge of the game.

As far as the school that I believe you're referring to as the golden child, they sure have the worse looking, outdated facility. You seem bitter, or have disdain towards that school or program. From what I see and hear that's one of the best in the state as of late. What's you're gripe?
