Meaning what?

I’m just saying, it’s weird that out of nowhere, a long time head coach whose father’s name is literally on the side of the field house abruptly leaves after a fairly successful 10 years at the helm, with quite a bit of talent in the pipeline to boot, for his replacement to simply resign after 3 weeks on the job.

I mean, it could be nothing but an unfortunate coincidence, but even if there’s no fire, there are definitely some smoke signals with that sequence of events.

County schools to overhaul schedule for grades 9-12

The Henry County School System is working to overhaul its schedule for students in grades 9-12 to give them a better shot at higher scores on their college admissions tests.

During the Feb. 13 meeting of the Henry County Board of Education, Leah Watkins, county director of schools, said several groups were working to find a schedule that would maximize the amount of instruction time students get, as well as eliminate gaps in the sequence of classes in certain subjects, such as math.

“Our goal in changing these schedules is about making sure that we’re maximizing instructional time with our students, making sure that they get the most time they can get and the least amount of time between when they take algebra one and geometry and algebra two,” she said.

The driving force behind the change, which is expected to take place at the start of the 2025-26 school year, is to raise ACT scores, which have plateaued in recent years.

“We’ve stayed relatively stagnant on our ACT scores,” Watkins said after the meeting. “So what we want to do is to be able to bring that up, because we know, for the number of students who are scoring a 21 or greater, that increases their readiness for college, if they’re going to college.”

Watkins said there were many options available, and it is just a matter of finding what will work best for the school system.

“We need to be able to prepare our students for that ACT test, making sure that they have what they need out of their core content areas,” she said. “But also, we want to honor what we do with work-based learning and CTE (career and technical education), and our partnerships with Dyersburg State (Community College) and with TCAT (Tennessee College of Applied Technology

HC is changing their school schedule and won’t have a 5th block football period. They are going to 7 classes a day and football won’t be one of them. No coach in their right mind is going to leave for a place that doesn’t have a football class/block

Maybe that’s why our education is so bad. We want football to be a class/block and not actual education.

if your football coach is quitting because of decisions the schools makes in an effort to increase ACT scores, I don’t think you had the right guy

Having a football period is not why our education is so bad.  I could argue that football period teaches you more life lessons about perseverance, how to win at life, and how to get back up when you get knocked down than any class will in high school.  I learned a lot more having football period then I did it over half my classes in high school that I still apply today and didn’t take away from my education or my ACT score and going to UT.  Heck the school I graduated from had 25 kids score over a 30 on the ACT this past year and two were All conference Football players and we have had a football period since 2007. (We are one of the top public school systems in the state and also have a great athletic programs no matter the sport).

It comes down to kids applying themselves in school and at home (parents have a lot to do with this and not all on teachers). Academics and Athletics should complement each other when it comes to student athletes at any school

I assume the last block will still be football. Instead of 1.5 hours it’ll be 45 mins.

Lol think about it as somebody adding 2-3 hours to your work day EVERY single day. There’s a reason multiple coaches turned this job down.

School ends at 3. Practice for 2 hours that puts it at 5. That’s what time most people get off and they work a lot more than 180 days a year. He was most likely getting 6 figures or close too it. I chose the wrong profession for sure!

who turned it down?
