Mr. Basketball Nominations

I don’t know who won 3A but I’ve been told by a couple of people with sources that the committee was almost unanimous on who would win based on what the sources have been told from people on the committee. If I had to bet on it I think Cobb wins it. My hope is Capps wins since it’s his senior year though.

To be the best you have to beat the best.... West Tn will win more gold balls than Middle Tn this year. 1a - Humbolt, 2a - Peabody, 3a - Jackson North Side or South Side, 4a - Bartlett Div 2 - AA - Briarcrest.

Your Ric Flair remark held weight until D1 split to 4 classes. Since that split, there have been 12 Gold Balls (3 years) and West TN has brought home 1 of them (Mem Overton in 2023). They have had good success in the D2 landscape over that period of time. I do believe West TN wins 4A. They (west tn) may sneak up and get the 3A or D2-AA championship as well, but i'd be surprised to see them get both.

When using the phrase "hot bed" that is referencing individual talent. Middle TN has surpassed West TN in that category. Especially with the additions of  C. Washington, J. Sanderson, & G. Solango this season.

Humboldt got boat raced by Jackson County. They won’t beat Pickett or Cheat Prep (although I’ll be pulling for them in that game if it happens) 3A maybe SS but not NS.

I've been wondering if the grade difference will play a factor in this decision too. Would like to see Capps win it but Cobb is on another level. Haven't seen the Greeneville kid much but seems special himself.

My understanding is that they don’t take their grade into account, as this is an award for what have you done only this year.

I always hate it when people bring relevant facts into conversation.

Matter of fact Knoxville and Upper East TN have won 7 championships since going to 4 classifications. That makes us at least warm embers.

Who is the tallest player in Tenn this year and who does he play for?

Lol Not sure but off the top of my head of kids Ive seen play this year between 6’10-7’:

Bennerman at Father Ryan, Solongo at Ensworth, Coles at WHHHS,  Rabie at Webb.

And many others at 6’8-6’9’’

Now I agree with East TN starting with the Fulton run then Alcoa sneaking that 1st one out then repeating (That Carter kid was the best I've seen at the High school level). I think ya'll have been drinking that West Tn water lol. Hats off to East TN basketball but that run is over lol.

I'm sure on paper they say they don't, and I agree that they shouldn't. I just feel like that has been a factor in previous years. I'd take Cobb over Capps, just don't know enough about the Greeneville kid to compare him to Cobb.

It usually goes to seniors as I look back at the list for previous years.  Capps is the only senior and if he gets it I feel he would be deserving. Nobody can honestly say the kid isn't good or Mr Basketball material.    He has had great year and career and he doesnt have the talent to go along with him that Cobb has.  I totally agree Cobb is more athletic and is so fun to watch but they both make a case to win it. Capps can not dunk like Cobb can but is as skilled as they come. Cobb will be out of this world good when he is a senior.  If I was on the committee  I would probably go with Thompson but that doesnt mean I don't think the other 2 would be worthy.  Trey can do it all and that's why he has power 5 offers.  I think he is the winner but once again- either one would be worthy.  What does everyone think about the winners of the other classes?

3A seems to be the only one people are talking about so I wondered thoughts on other classes.

    • Unfortunately the state is littered with well-intentioned people working games that have no idea what they are doing. Of course they mean well, and I know that these are volunteers, but part of the reason that athletics in Tennessee is slipping is because of the willingness to accept lower standards.
    • Someone with more direct information can tell me if this is inaccurate, but my understanding is that coaches and Athletic Directors were pretty much unanimous in their support for a shot clock but it was still tabled and will be at least two years before the conversation can come back up. And even then it would take a year or two to implement once approved.  I personally think it’s long overdue. And I am not saying the shot clock should be :24 but it should be enough to force a team to do something.  To me, the worst part of the delay is that fact that there’s no argument of substance for shot clocks to be delayed. More than anything else it is an argument about having qualified people to operate them.
    • Don’t want to see it.  Will lead to wild shot.  Not to mention people running it that have no idea what they are doing    other team gets a lead get out there and force the action
