It usually goes to seniors as I look back at the list for previous years.  Capps is the only senior and if he gets it I feel he would be deserving. Nobody can honestly say the kid isn't good or Mr Basketball material.    He has had great year and career and he doesnt have the talent to go along with him that Cobb has.  I totally agree Cobb is more athletic and is so fun to watch but they both make a case to win it. Capps can not dunk like Cobb can but is as skilled as they come. Cobb will be out of this world good when he is a senior.  If I was on the committee  I would probably go with Thompson but that doesnt mean I don't think the other 2 would be worthy.  Trey can do it all and that's why he has power 5 offers.  I think he is the winner but once again- either one would be worthy.  What does everyone think about the winners of the other classes?

3A seems to be the only one people are talking about so I wondered thoughts on other classes.

I hope Auden Slaughter wins 1A, IDK much about 2A, 4A I hope Christian Brown gets it as he has been dominant this season, but it wouldn't shock me if it went to Butler out of Whitehaven. A lot of times they will give the nods to the best player on the best team. Hence why Capps or Thompson didn't win 3A last year. So Butler winning it wouldn't shock me. I hope Jayden jones out of goodpasture wins D2 1A. I would love to see Cam Blivens win D2 2A, but I think Fred Smith will win since he is on the best team of the 3 options (Both are great options though).

Many really deserving athletes!

To be the best you have to beat the best.... West Tn will win more gold balls than Middle Tn this year. 1a - Humbolt, 2a - Peabody, 3a - Jackson North Side or South Side, 4a - Bartlett Div 2 - AA - Briarcrest.

Lol... everyone was saying Bartlett last year too... how'd that work out?

A- Chat Prep, Pickett, or Eagleville

AA-Loretto

AAA - NS/SS - this is your best chance but I wouldn't count out upperman or hume

AAAA-Bearden or Hillsboro

Div2AA - KnoxWebb and it isn't close.

Lol. I wish we could bet!!! Bartlett and Humbolt and NS/SS is winning it all this year. I'll give AA to Loretto or Alcoa. The West is back baby lol

only one of three players in the state ( that i have found ) averaging over 20 points p game and over 10 reb p game makes it to be a finalist. not only do they avg a double double, but over 20 points p game.  how do they get left out of being finalists. shame on the voters for not having cutter sisk - beech and will mccrary - jackson co for not being a finalist. both teams have great records as well.

2 of 3? And thats still not right I found 6/7 in just a quick search that average 20/10 and several were not nominated. Dont want to negatively speak on players, both guys you mentioned are very good and important to their teams. Ive seen them play and many others this year and I’m sure they got some consideration. Do politics affect these outcomes? We’d prolly agree they do but for this I think many people who watch alot of high level players around the state think a big majority of the ones who earned the finalist nominations were deserving/justified and known for elite play.

I just saw that in District 7AAA that Cade Capps was a co-MVP with who I assume will be Ty Cobb as the other co-MVP. I just find it funny that the district couldn't even pick between the 2 for MVP and they are both Mr. Basketball finalists. Seeing this feels like a 'we don't want to be the ones to choose between the 2' moment.

This is terrible in my opinion. In the two head to head matchups Cobb clearly was the better overall player. He plays defense at a MUCH higher level than Capps does which makes him an all around better player. Capps plays to not get a foul called on him and maybe that’s by design but there is more to being an mvp than scoring points which they are basically even on that. Maybe the voting was done by democrats where everyone gets a trophy. Why not just give every teams best player co-mvp!  Makes as much sense as this does. If Capps is not the son of the head coach he doesn’t get the nod. I’m not trying to disrespect this young man and his achievements in any way. He’s a great scorer of the basketball and ANY coach would love to have him on their roster. No question about that. However if we are choosing an M V P then it needs to be the BEST all around individual player.  I think some people need to grow a pair in my opinion.
