We were fortunate to be the better team today. Tullahoma is a great squad. I’ve waited many years for this moment to bring Baxter a basketball state championship. All I can say is I’m overjoyed.

Congrats!

A lot of it was the fouls when they were behind it was probably closer to 20 vs 10, and that’s because Upperman drove to the basket more where as Tullahoma took more outside shots.

I disagree with this that foul count was heavily favored one way the whole second half. We weren't down bad enough to foul that much late. They were in the bonus the 3rd and 4th qtr. It was over 5 to 0 in fouls the majority of the 3rd qtr. One team was able to be way more physical the second half and the other was not. We had a bunch of passes to the paint where the upperman defender went through our player to make a play and no call. I wish it would've been called better in the second half. At the end of the day it is what it is. We made history for our school and had a great season. Upperman won and congrats to them! It was a fun tournament and not the ending we wanted but very proud none the less!

I feel ya

I had almost the same arguement with someone on here and they said “we are just more disciplined”

No team is that disciplined. Last thing i'll say about this is looking at the stats they shot 69 free throws (35 against us) and the other teams they played combined shot 27. They shot more free throws in our game than all the teams they played in the whole state tournament combined. Its kind of hard to lose when you have that many opportunities to get free points.

Did the other teams drive to the basket like Cobb?

Absolutely they did, they just weren't protected like he was nor able to push off or drive head first to the basket and not get a charge call. Don't get me wrong the kid is talented so he didn't need all the extra help. We drove to the basket in our game and was pushed and fouled and it was let go. But when we did the same it got called. I just feel like it's the state championship game call it the same way and let the kids and coaches decide who wins.

He got called for a charge in the game against y’all!  What about the bogus technical that was called on Upperman?

I watched the championship game of the Cobb Kid in the tournament, he definitely got away with pushing off with his no ball had. He see that he had 14 points from the free throw line alone..... Lebron James treatment lol. He can play ball tho.

So I just went back and looked at the stats and entering the 4th it was 11 to 10 in favor of Upperman on free throw attempts. Upperman had 18 in the last 4 minutes when up by 10. So I do feel like a lot of that is the game situation.

Now I definitely could be wrong, but in most cases when a team is up by 10+ with 4 minutes to go and there’s no shot clock I would expect the team leading by such to get more free throws, and the Other team to foul/be more aggressive.

trust me it is frustrating though as both times Upperman has played Hume-Fogg they had 10+ more free throws than us. Last years it was more of a difference maker than this year though.

in this years matchup vs Hume-Fogg  really my only complaint with the officials was some of the fouls being called shooting fouls as opposed to before the shot.

Not a comment on the foul situation at state, but an old observation and story.  I hired a basketball coach who use to say there is a difference between fouls and foul shots. You are in control of your foul shots. After one poor foul shooting game. Coach made his players run 5 laps for each foul shot he had missed and 10 laps if you missed the front end of a one and one. I think we missed 8 front ends which is 16 points.

Yeah. At the end of the day Upperman hit a TON of those chances. hardly ever missed. Super impressive, and they did it last year too (or at least vs Hume-Fogg).

    • Great post. I appreciate an intellectual discussion. I wrote "they" in my reference for figurative purposes. If the shoe fits. Honestly, I was referring more to the parents if I had to label a specific generation.  Only 1 statement you made in which I place myself on the opposing side. Effort and Commitment shouldn't change appearance. Those 2 terms have thousands of years of shaping (sports aside). I feel they are significantly pure when evaluating a football team and its capacity of both.  Maryville and Alcoa mastered the zip code thing you mentioned. When kids enroll there, they fully expect to win a state championship. I know that's kind of big scale and an extreme for the example, but it does exist. I support the idea of the old timers just saying how much better things were back then. I agree, that does nothing for kids. Zero motivational help. I guess I was taking the analytical approach and trying to examine some comparisons across the history of the program. Nothing against our kids in this community. We have some great athletes! With the proper guidance, they can be successful.
    • Based on this thread, the hurt feeling are coming from the AC haters.  When a kid transfers to AC it's recruiting. When a kid transfers to a Blount county school it's not.  Got it. [S]
    • But will white be interested in B Satt??
    • Does he have the speed to move up in the rankings. And what position will he play in college. Sort of reminds me of the groves kids the last two years in that respect, doesn’t necessarily have a position at the P4 level. TE?
