Shot Clock Please.....

Could we please hurry up and get a shot clock for High School Basketball. Throughout the season I've seen at least 3 teams get up by 6 points with 3 mins left in the game and started playing keep away with the ball. Shot clock please....

Yes I’m with you!  Girls basketball is even worse!  It will happen eventually

Someone with more direct information can tell me if this is inaccurate, but my understanding is that coaches and Athletic Directors were pretty much unanimous in their support for a shot clock but it was still tabled and will be at least two years before the conversation can come back up. And even then it would take a year or two to implement once approved.

I personally think it’s long overdue. And I am not saying the shot clock should be :24 but it should be enough to force a team to do something.

To me, the worst part of the delay is that fact that there’s no argument of substance for shot clocks to be delayed. More than anything else it is an argument about having qualified people to operate them.

Not to mention people running it that have no idea what they are doing

Unfortunately the state is littered with well-intentioned people working games that have no idea what they are doing. Of course they mean well, and I know that these are volunteers, but part of the reason that athletics in Tennessee is slipping is because of the willingness to accept lower standards.

Inevitably, this is going to happen, maybe not next year, but maybe in 10 years, it will happen.  Why not get ahead of the game and begin to educate districts so that the districts can start preparing or training others to run a shot clock.  I have heard all the arguments as to why not, and schools don't have people that can run the clock correctly much less a shot clock.  Same can be said for the classroom and the front office but we still have to hire teachers, administrative assistants and administrators.  Schools don't have the money to purchase that equipment or pay someone to run the clock.....YES THEY DO.  Give the schools a full year to get the equipment purchased and installed and set up for two or three years down the road.

Hire someone right now to go across the state and start educating AD's and coaches.  This might take a year or maybe two years, but be proactive.   I know there is a shortage on officials, but go ahead and have a 4th official at the game (if there is a JV game then that official is already there) and pay them to run the shot clock and also have a 4th official there in the event another official goes down during the game. This could also be during a trial period where the 4th official oversees a school employee for a year to make sure that school understands what the expectation is.   I believe basketball is the only sport in high school where you cannot actually do something in a warm-up that is actually allowed in a game compared to other sports and its respective sport at the next level.  Why does basketball at the high school level not mirror basketball at the college level like other sports?

Not saying that any of my suggestions are correct or can't be adjusted or changed but I agree it is time for the shot clock, and it is time for the restricted area to help officials with the block/charge call.

Yes. Agreed. I ran shot clock for college about 9 years ago, the shot clock had built-in device technology to allow the ref's whistle to sync in with the shot clock. I'm not even sure they still use that today or not, but the argument against it's use because of implementation does not stand any longer.

Not today at the high school level. Just half to rely on the clock operator to stop the clock immediately, not the technology we see where the clock stops when the whistle is blown because of the technology they have at the college level.

Well, if it will rely on the clock operator, I might change my answer...lol. I watched a game in 2022 at Livingston Academy where the clock keeper forgot to start the clock allowing White County to hit a three. WC went on to win by a total of 3 points.

    • Great post. I appreciate an intellectual discussion. I wrote "they" in my reference for figurative purposes. If the shoe fits. Honestly, I was referring more to the parents if I had to label a specific generation.  Only 1 statement you made in which I place myself on the opposing side. Effort and Commitment shouldn't change appearance. Those 2 terms have thousands of years of shaping (sports aside). I feel they are significantly pure when evaluating a football team and its capacity of both.  Maryville and Alcoa mastered the zip code thing you mentioned. When kids enroll there, they fully expect to win a state championship. I know that's kind of big scale and an extreme for the example, but it does exist. I support the idea of the old timers just saying how much better things were back then. I agree, that does nothing for kids. Zero motivational help. I guess I was taking the analytical approach and trying to examine some comparisons across the history of the program. Nothing against our kids in this community. We have some great athletes! With the proper guidance, they can be successful.
    • Based on this thread, the hurt feeling are coming from the AC haters.  When a kid transfers to AC it's recruiting. When a kid transfers to a Blount county school it's not.  Got it. [S]
    • But will white be interested in B Satt??
    • Does he have the speed to move up in the rankings. And what position will he play in college. Sort of reminds me of the groves kids the last two years in that respect, doesn’t necessarily have a position at the P4 level. TE?
