History of Nashville Football - Question

Stan...........I think it is hard to compare. There were some very good teams in the 70's that did not go to the playoffs under the old 3 class format. We all agree that Riverdale, Brentwood, Maryville, & Hillsboro were great teams this year........under the old format AAA---who is State Champ???? Plus throw in the MBA, BA, McCallie. Now pick one!

Under the old format where only 1 went from a district or region went.......Hillsboro would have stayed at home last year, Columbia was their 1st team.

Best case on this was the very good Mt Juliet teams of the 70's that could never get past Gallatin in their district thus no playoffs. A couple of years those 2 were best two AAA teams in the state. MJ would have made noise in the playoffs and I am certain Gallatin would have not wanted to play them again.

Present system is probably better but our state is to small for 5 classes plus the private school thing is simply a regular season "rehash" :)

Three consecutive undefeated seasons is remarkable. I don't think this achievement is receiving the recognition it deserves.

I am not trying to compare teams. My focus is simply on undefeated regular seasons and appearances in state championship games.

As Bill Parcells says, "You are what your record says you are." I simply want to know how many teams in Nashville have had three consecutive undefeated seasons.

Austin Denney graduated in 1962. He was named all-city in all three sports (football, basketball, and baseball). He lead the football team to a bowl game ( I can't remember which one, but I will look it up), and the basketball and baseball teams to the state tournament. The '65 Dons went 10-1. I also stand corrected. They defeated Stratford during the regular season, not the Clinic Bowl. I believe they were coached by Jody Ellis. Mike Jones graduating in 1966 means he was the leader of the "65 Spartans during the fall of his senior year. Chuck Steagald, Kenny Johnson, Steve Burger, Jamie Jamison, John Lyons and Mike Bevans were just a few of the Dons in '65. I will try to see if I can find any more info for Stan.

Stan, MBA went undefeated in 1966--9-0-1 NIL Champs

1967--10-0 NIL and State Champs

1968--11-0 NIL and State Champs

They went to the Clinic Bowl all three years

1966 beat Litton 21-0

1967 beat Stratford 20-0

1968 beat Gallatin 35-7

So I guess the answer to the question that started all this is yes, it has been done before although it is still an incredible accomplishment.

To bighurt, I found this caption

Nov.12, 1965; Donelson 28- Stratford 21--Victory clinched Big Nine crown and CLinic Bowl berth. After a scoreless first period, the Dons grabbed a 14-7 half-time lead and were on top 21-7 in the third before Stratford rallied to tie with 3:20 left to play. David Stewart passed in the flat to Steagald who raced 57 yards for the game-winner. Steagald had two touchdown catches of 45 and 57 yards and had a 99-yard kickoff return called back. Mike Jones, Stratford quarterback, later a defensive back at Tennessee, rushed for 152 yards on 27 carries.

Donelson went on to beat Lebanon 28-0 in the '65 Clinic Bowl.

Scrappy, Bellevue's best seasons were

1967/8-2 Crockett Bowl

1971/8-2-1 Lions Bowl

1972/7-3-1 Lions Bowl

    • He resigned smh, and have you ever heard of charged but not convicted. Some people in this county baffle me with their need to slander others. Have you asked any of the 30+ parents that signed a petition to get him reinstated at the board meeting this week how they feel about this? Just let it play out, at the end of the day the only people that will bring TC back are the ones that know what its about at its core.    People hate losing and they aren't used to it at TC. I for 1, and I'm sure others too, understand having a dip in talent and not being able to compete for a state title every year. But in the past, TC teams have outworked more talented teams, they didn't continuously lose the turnover battle, they didn't commit 8+ penalties in several games each season, and I believe several of the folks in town that want Blake out feel as if he is neglecting the history of the program. This is from a source that used to be extremely close to the program (not me lol), Blake gets out of school midday and the players show up and there is no practice plan or itinerary.  I also understand those that are on team Blake, when he has loads of talent, he wins. He does know football and he is a tremendous DC, and if the rumors are true then he will do great things. As for the board member issue, it is what it is, everyone that's true to the county know that and nothing has changed. I agree though that they should strive to make the facilities as good as we can. And as far as potential candidates, I agree there is very few options. West, Vetetoe (yes I know), and couple others that could have some interest. Whatever happens is massive for the program during a pivotal time before the next big wave of stars make their way through.
    • McKenzie had no trouble with Huntingdon.
    • Has BA landed any cornfed cowboys to block up front?
    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
