Legality of Stunts

I have looked at the TSSAA regulations and found nothing that says that "flipping basket tosses" are illegal to perform at games. I am aware that in competition they are illegal, but the only thing I found in the general cheerleading regulations for football and basketball games about stunting was that pyramids can be no more than 2 people high. If flipping baskets are legal...here is another question.. if some guys from a cheerleading gym that coach me were to come to a basketball game and during a timeout or in between a quarter or something throw me in a basket is that okay? Or is there a rule against that, since they are not on the cheerleading squad. That might sound like a stupid question, but I really have no idea. Our student section just really gets into our tumbling and stunting between quarters and timeouts, and I thought it'd be cool if they came and we could put up some really cool baskets to get everyone excited. Let me know if you know anything PLEASE!!!

All I can tell you is that my coach has repeatedly told us that back tuck baskets are illegal by TSSAA. I also know that anything over 2 people high is definately illegal. As far as having others come in and stunt with you, I can definately see how that would be illegal but I'm not sure. I'd advise against it though. I've seen it done and it looks really tacky. It looks as though the other team can't do the stunt so they have to bring in people that can. I would focus on getting your squad up to the level of that stunt. It will make you look like and be a stronger group.

my gut instinct here is telling me that you guys are probably right about the legality, but why would it be such a big deal to use a difficult basket toss at a game or a pep rally, if its used to get the crowd going? it may be illegal at competitions, but at an event that is sanctioned by the TSSAA for football or basketball, not cheerleading, what rules really do apply?

Yall all make good points. I mean it isn't that our squad couldn't do the stunt. We stunt very well and could probably do a flipping basket, the thing is I feel more comfortable with the guys there. Sometimes on our squad the bases tend to freak out when we try something a little more difficult and sorta forget to CATCH. And that would not be pretty on the gym floor out of a flipping basket. lol. And it isn't like these are random people coming in. Most everyone who has anything to do with our squad including students who just come to competitions to support us know these guys. They have worked closely with the girls on our squad since most of us were little. And they have come to pep rallies and games to help out with things too so our principal also knows them. The main reason I asked was b/c I saw a guy get thrown out of a bball game the other day for tumbling, which I thought was crazy. BUT we were in Georgia and their rules are a little bit different. I guess the best idea would be to talk to my coach about it. Thanks for yalls help.

I don't think it would be the right move to perform such a stunt. I say that simply as a liability issue with outsiders coming in. Your school and TSSAA assume responsibility for you when you are participating in your sport or if cheering at a school sponsored activity. If these guys are covered by your school, and something were to happen, that's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

 

I agree with Eaglefan...practice it with your squad and be able to do it. Plus, for YOUR squad, there is no other squad around town that is as good as ya'll. So you already can show them up....well I know that "guy" from Ridgeland thought he could out-tumble Flipn4OHS! He was soon escorted out of the building!

The rules do change from state to state...

 

I can remember how upset my school's cheerleaders were when went to Florida for a holiday tournament. They were used to standing on the sidelines and cheering in Kentucky, but in Florida (at the time at least) they were only allowed to stand during timeouts and only allowed on the floor once in the pregame and once at halftime.

 

So it's possible a tumbling run was illegal in Georgia.

Nope Grad, You're right. Nothing is cheerleading is simple. The stunts are difficult, the tumbling is difficult, putting up with bad games and bad crowds is difficult, and remembering all the rules is difficult. Oh well, nothing in life is easy. lol.

Yea I can see that Grad. That's what I was thinking would be the problem, oh well that's alright haha, cause I'm going to do a stunt routine in the talent show this year i believe. It'll be cool!
