Who cares what you can bench. Can you throw shot? Most people can bench. heck, I bench 330 and I weigh 190, so that's no big deal. Quickness will help shot, but form will help the most. Technique is the key to throwing, whether it be discus or shot. If you've got good form, then the weight room will only help you.

the best shot throwers i have seen were not the biggest or strongest guys, it was the guys with good form and technique, when my brother was doing field events a few years ago the kid who won shot in region weighed about 175 pounds but could throw the shot about 49-50 feet, no joke i saw him do it, he was so explosive through his hips and he jus knew ho to use all of his body and not just his upper body

45-46 feet is a pretty good throw, to garantee a spot at state you need like 47-49 depending what region youre in. The lowest place at state in AAA was 43 from Tullahoma but he was throwing it farther than that at regionals. A good throw involves mostly quickness across the circle, explosive power out of the power position, and torque from your hips. Bench has almost nothing to do with it. I benched 315 as a sophmore before I quit working out, now I bench considerably less but consistantly throw 3 or 4 feet further, just because my technique is better. I mean obviously a stronger guy is going to be able to throw it further than somebody who benches 50 pounds but after you get to a certain level of strength it really makes little difference.

    • QUICK UPDATE -  First, I see a lot of wrestling names that I recognize on that GoFundMe.  THANK YOU so much for helping this family.   After the long surgery on Sunday morning to repair his neck, Jacob suffered a collapsed lung.  Sometimes this happens after long surgeries.  They had to put him on a ventilator to get his breathing back on track.  He came off the vent on Monday morning and they put a BIPAP on him to help control his breathing.  As of today, Thursday, the BIPAP came off and he is breathing well on his own.  He is working towards drinking a glass of water and hopefully eating some solid food at some point in the near future. Jacob can "feel" when someone touches his legs, but there is still no movement.  His parents are beginning to prepare for him to be moved to the Shepherd Center in the next few days.  He will be there in Atlanta for 30-45 days.  Im sure he will receive excellent treatment. Please continue to pray for healing for him and if you are so moved, please contribute to the gofundme link above to help in any way you can.  The go fund me is doing well, but this is going to be a very long road for these guys Im afraid.. Thanks again! Sells
