mustang69,

That was Randy Franks from McKenzie you were thinking about and he was a good athlete along with the Chism's. Franks was a good football player as well. Also, Teresa (Hale) Donald was certainly a great basketball player at Atwood.

Sauce,

Thanks for remembering Les Bingham who played in the NFL and was from Trezevant. Don't know how I forgot about him, he was a friend of my Dad's. There were a couple of brothers from Trezevant by the name of Willie and Gene Hickerson who played college football at Ole Miss if I'm not mistaken and I believe it was Gene that went on from there to play in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns I think it was (it could have been another NFL team--it was a long time ago!!!)

Man, this thread is bringin' back some OLD memories!!!!!!!! thumb thumb

Former McKenzie high school principal and superintendent Joe Williams played at the University of Kentucky and roomed with George Blanda.

True, Joe Williams was a good one too and, well, us old timers ALL remember George Blanda!!!! Blanda played QB for Oakland untill he could only trot, running was out of the question. Then he went on to kick for them 'till he was about 65. He was a PLAYER!!!!!!!! (FOOTBALL THAT IS!)

hbc21, you're holding up Bruceton in this thread, you remember a guy by the name of Ben Hartsfield?????? He coached over here at McKenzie for a while when my son was playing and I really liked him. I always thought he had head coach material. Don't know what happened to him after he left McKenzie. But, I hear he was a pretty decent player.

The Pro Football Enclyclopedia lists Les Bingaman as being born in McKenzie but shows he attended Lew Wallace HS in Gary, IN and then the University of Illinois. He played for the Detroit Lions from 1948 to 1954. Gene Hickerson from Trezevant played for the Cleveland Browns from 1958 thru 1973.

    • From my understanding, Jay Graham pretty much took over HC responsibilities in that game, so you can thank him. Cute Andy didn’t need help, though. Cute Andy could’ve beaten us without any assistant coaches.
    • Tax payer dollars are paid for certified teachers to "teach" and then coach. The primary job is to teach.  There are some district that ay awesome supplements and others that don't. Dyersburg and Dyer County are pretty close if I remember correctly. I would imagine that Football and basketball are above $10,000 now.  I've heard that Milan is $20,000 for boys basketball. I would imagine that football is more than that in Milan.  Collierville has camps that coaches get paid extra for. 3 camps a year, 100 kids a camp, $30,000 right there.  There are places like Memphis-Shelby County schools where the supplements are garbage even for the head coaches. I made less than $3,000 as the head assistant at Germantown in 2015 when we were 26-4 and one of the best teams in the Southeast. As a head middle school coach next year I will make between $4-5,000 at a municipal in Shelby County.  Coaches should be compensated for the jobs that are required but lets keep in mind that they are educators first.  It's pretty frustrating to other teachers that work their tale off teaching 6-7 classes a day to watch someone roam campus, not teach (or have very minimal responsibilities), and get paid the same (more with supplements) as a person who has the some years of experience or sometimes less.
    • This will get coaches leaving the profession very quickly if this kid wins this case. This is absurd...
    • yeah money aint right there anymore
