Getting the big "T"

Got a technical foul called the other night by a highly experienced official for making the statement, "guys, we need a few more fouls called out there". It was in the 3rd quarter and it wasn't said very loud at all. My assistant coach, sitting right behind me even didn't hear me say it. The official had just let a hard contact play occur and was walking by in front of me going the other direction. I had not said anything to anyone about the officiating in the 1st half. Called time out and tried to ask him why and he said "I don't have to explain it". We have never had prior run-ins or anything.

My question to other coaches....What are some of the cheapest technicals you have had called on you or some of the things you have done to get one?

My question to you officials.....What are some of the things that set you off? Do you have discussions with other officials prior to the game or at half time? Do some of you look to give them easily?

In 8-AA during the Greenbrier at David Lipscomb game the Greenbrier coach got one called for saying "I guess that was a charge too". He was sitting down and didn't even say it very loud. The official just happened to be right in front of him. The reason he said that to begin with was because of a very questionable call where a Greenbrier player was shooting and got fouled on the way up, but the official called a charge. Yes, the Greenbrier coach questioned the call as most would. He did not rant and rave like some coaches do, he just asked....How can that be a charge? The T came at a very critical point in the game in the 3rd quarter. Greenbrier led the whole game until this point. David Lipscomb went on the win the game by 12 and finished 2nd in the district, while Greenbrier finished 3rd.

Oh...by the way....Lipscomb shot 34 FT's to Greenbrier's 11 for the game.

I guess a lot of it depends on the mood.

I saw a technical foul given to a player for "faceguarding." Player was guarding his man with the ball and stuck his hand in the offensive player's face (as most coaches teach). I looked it up and it is a rule, but it is pretty bizarre. The assisstant coach asked where the hand was supposed to go and was given an "I don't know" type of answer. Anybody else ever seen this one? If so, what were the circumstances?

@ a clay co, hermitage springs game this year one of our post players got a rebound and was jus spinning around. and if you knew himyou would know that he'snot agressive and when he came arond his elbow were,i guess somewhat out, and they called a T on him. first of all it isat worst a offensive foul. second he wasn't tryin to hit anyone, and third he didn't hit anyone. it was a very horrible call. but all in all our team had around 15 T's this year alone so the refs have it out for them to begin with!!! Refs suck. almost all of them!!!

Tonight I saw the craziest T I have ever seen in my life. It was in the first round of the 10AAA girls tournament. 1st quarter with about 2 1/2 min. left to go. The coach steps up to call a play for his girl to run (no more than 2 feet out of the coaches box). All the sudden the rear official, not even looking at him. Turned around blew his whistle and gave the coach a tech for being out of the coaches box. It's very rare you see a tech called for being out of the coaches box as it is. But with no warning. the coach hasn't said a word to the officials all night. I mean dang..the ref wasn't even looking at him when he blew his whistle. It was the most rediculous thing i have ever, EVER seen.

Correct call.

Although I saw one game this year where that wasn't called; and the other coach got mad and wound up getting stuck, because the official was looking right at it.

Come to find out; the official didnt know the rule.

Was at a Knoxville Christmas Tournament this year....

Pretty physical girls game (aren't they all??); eventually both coaches had their teams warned after a hard foul, which sent Coach A off on a frenzy, ranting and raving for a good 30 seconds yelling.

Play resumed with Coach B's team shooting free-throws, as Coach B was talking things over with another official calmly. First free-throw was up and good, and as the second free-throw was being administered, the referee doing so, ran out and stuck Coach B with a technical, leaving Coach B rather dumbfounded.

Coach A was never hit with a technical foul.

For the most part, the officials are thin-skinned and quick on the trigger.

Some coaches have ways of getting under that thin skin.

Refs that call T's for little things like going by and simply saying that you've been bloodied because you were guarded so closely that you got scratched is ticky-tack.

The instances that dukevol and PTSportswriter mention when the coach is being fairly calm and getting T'd up is ridiculous.

And yes a ref should have to explain why...for my money I'd be on the phone with the assigning official and see what the deal is.

Anyway you look at it, our officials have a devil-may-care attitude because there's no accountability for questionable calls...no discipline...no nothing. They get a pass. They may get their ear bent by fans (if they don't have them escorted out) and coaches, but they have very little right to complain.

All we want is consistency...good or bad.

I've never seen faceguarding called. Ever. And I see kids doing it almost every possession.

It may be in the rulebook, but it sure as heck must not be in the casebook.

Having your drawstring tucked in, on the other hand...

The coaches are warned at the beginning of the game about the coaches box...the coaches box is a point of emphasis this year by the TSSAA, I guarntee, the coach already knew this....also this isn't the first game of the season, it's the district tourney, he knew better.

THIN SKINNED?!??! What world are you living in? Referee's take abuse from beginning to end on most games from the coaches and the fans. If they were all thin skinned then the game would be over in the 1st qtr.

Referees aren't allowed to critique the players or the coaches, so what gives the coaches the right to critique the refs? I've seen many of coaches call dumb plays and I've never said a word to them.

Explaining the call? No, refs are told NOT to explain the call...it's a refs choice, if he says anything at all, but once you give a technical, the coach isn't going to be the most calm person to speak with. Which in turns could lead him to receive his second "T".

<No accountability for questionable calls...no discipline...no nothing. They get a pass. They may get their ear bent by fans (if they don't have them escorted out) and coaches, but they have very little right to complain.>

HA! This above statement is a JOKE...whenever you're ready to get a shirt and a whistle, just give me a holler. I bet no one would yell at you! HA!

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..

    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
