Reports out of Knoxville tonight say that men's head basketball coach Buzz Peterson has been fired from his post. Buzz in four years at UT was 61-59 and never made it to the NCAA Tournament. Tyler Smith has committed to UT, but now with Buzz gone will he honor that commitment or will he go somewhere else? I think the best thing for Tyler would be to go somewhere else at this point. I am a huge UT fan and hope Tyler stays, but in the best interest of Tyler he needs to go somewhere else. What is everyone else's opinions?

Tyler Smith isn't just committed to UT, he signed with UT during the early signing period in November. He is a Vol. Case closed. If he opts to go elsewhere it will be without a scholarship and he'll have to sit for his first year.

A change in coaches isn't an automatic release of a signed letter of intent. Players sign with the school, not with the coach.

What is the exact procedure on this? Could a player ask to be released by the school, and if released, sign elsewhere without having to sit out a year?

I'll bet that at least one Pitino's recruits enters the Draft out of high school. Seems like his recruits tend to leave early or never even make it to college i.e. Telfair, Mercer.

Ron Mercer went to school, although it wasn't for very long. Sebastian Telfair should have gone to Louisville this past year. He is playing for the lowly Portland Trail Blazers right now and not having near the success he would have enjoyed at UL.

The same situation happened at Arkansas when Nolan Richardson left. His whole recruiting class bailed and it was one of his best in years. Tyler signed with the University however NCAA laws say that if there is a coaching change a player can transfer without losing a year of eligibility. Tyler Smith will probably ask for a letter of release and its a given that the university will grant it. Unless they get a big name coach in, I dont see him staying.

It all really depends on how close to home does Tyler really want to be. If he wants to win, then there are plenty of big time programs that would love to have him. If he wants to stay close to home, then Tennessee is the right place for him to be. That is why it is TYLER SMITH'S DECISION and nobody else should have a say as to where the young man wants to play college basketball.

Not so quick. Most of the high profile recruits are advised not to sign their national letter, just for the purpose of this situation. Tyler may not have signed his national letter because of the cloud over Buzz. Maybe UT will go after Travis Ford as the next coach.

Where did you see this, cause the only thing I have seen is where he has comitted to UT. Unapproved Website only has him committed to UT and that is the top recruiting site in the nation. If you want the Link here it is UT's 2005 Committments. Unless UT can get a big name coach from a quality Division I program then look for Tyler to head elsewhere and I think Dotson may end up at a mid-major.

I've never heard this... All anyone has ever reported was that he was committed... He committed in November.... If he signed then it has had to be recently... not in november.. Because his verbal was in november..

    • You defend your little buddy bsatt like it’s the end of the world just as much. Why don’t you go on to Upperman with him this summer… you know he is your “BEST MAN”.
    • No sir. Not staying at East. But definitely not going to Elizabethton.
    • Football and basketball coaches should not be making 100,000 not teaching any classes unless their winning state championship every year lol
