The Nevada Union Miners opened up practice for the 2024-25 football season this week, and there is a lot to be excited about.
“Having football in action feels amazing,” Miners head football coach Brad Sparks said. “This is 30 years of coaching high school football, and I cannot remember the last time I was this excited. We return eight starters on defense. We are fast, physical, and big with tons of experience.”
The Miners have four returning All Foothill Valley (FVL) players returning this season, which should help lead the Miners to a successful season.
“We have all-league first-team players returning: linebacker Jake Barefield, Carter Van Matre, free safety Grady Kamba, and linebacker Elijah Rogers,” Sparks said.
The Miners should have a solid defense, and with a new signal caller on the offensive side of the ball and more returning players, the coaching staff should be excited.
“We are also super excited about our offense. Liam Crossen calling the signals, Rhyder Eelkema returning at running back and Logan Eandi at wide receiver, with 6’5 278, pound Nate Via anchoring the O-line,” Sparks said.
“We also are excited about MarcAnthony Anderson and Brandon Mccallum at full-back and Ziggy Pritchett and Carter Van Matre at wing-back, “ Sparks said. “We have two very explosive tight ends, Austin Putnam and Johnathan Edwards. We also return right offensive tackle Brogen Lyden, 6’3, 270.”
The Miners hit the field Friday, August 9, for the Blue and Gold Scrimmage at 7:00 p.m. at Nevada Union High School. This scrimmage is an opportunity for the team to showcase their skills and for the fans to get a preview of the upcoming season.
Friday, August 16, will be the Miners Jamboree with the Miners, the Bear River Bruins, the Sutter Huskies, and the Pleasant Valley Vikings. The Jamboree is a friendly pre-season event where the teams can test their strategies and players before the official season starts. It will be at 6:45 p.m. at Nevada Union High School.
The Miners open the season Friday, August 23, against the Chico Panthers at 7:00 p.m. at Nevada Union High School.
