Missed putts and missed classes will both be few if the Brush Beetdiggers follow through on their boys’ golf game plan for 2010.

“I try to have us play as many (meets) as possible before school starts, that way they won’t miss too many days of school,” coach George Mussell explained. “That’s important to some of them.”

Brush fans should also give the plan an ‘A’ grade, because they’ll have a chance to watch their first fall sports action of 2010 this week. The Beetdiggers are hosting their season-opening golf invitational on Thursday afternoon at Bunker Hill Golf Course.

Big rival Yuma, Burlington, Limon, Cheyenne Wells and Sterling’s JV team will provide some good competition for this 1 p.m., 18-hole event.

Early August openers can set the tone for an entire season. Exactly one year ago today, Brush’s Coyote Coen captured a top-five placing and went on to his first 4A state tournament appearance at Cougar Canyon golf course near Trinidad.

“Coyote has more length to his game this fall, and he’s always had really good touch around the greens,” Mussell observed. “When he has both those parts of his game working, he can be really tough to beat.”

The returning district runner-up is leading Brush again as they entered today’s final preseason practice. Gregory Mares and Colby Needens — who were both just three strokes from Top 10 district places last fall — are the other top two ‘Digger players returning.

“Those two played about five tournaments this summer as part of the Northeast Colorado Junior tour,” the coach revealed. “That can only help their games.”

Tim Lyne and freshman Bryce Needens were ready to decide that fourth varsity spot at Bunker Hill today.

However, Brush isn’t the only Morgan County fall sports team swinging into action on Thursday. The Fort Morgan Mustangs — fresh off their first 4A state team appearance since 1997 — are playing a league match hosted by Windsor at Pelican Lakes golf course (9 a.m. start).

Top players Nash Bledsoe, Collin Goetz and Kade Tibbetts are all returning for new coach Tyler Tarpley’s first FM team. Watch for more about those Mustangs in The Times later this week.
