Timber Creek, Colonial will tangle again after girls basketball region quarterfinal wins

District rivals Timber Creek and Colonial will meet for the third time next week after each won girls basketball region tournament quarterfinal games Thursday night.

The Wolves (16-5) were dominant during a 70-52 win vs. visiting Dr. Phillips (16-8) in Class 7A Region 1 behind all-around efforts from junior Savannah Henderson and senior Zora Fray-Chinn.

Henderson tallied 27 points and 8 rebounds while Fray-Chinn accounted for 11 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds. Colleen Shanahan added 15 points for Timber Creek, which reached the state semifinals last season.

Trinity Turner paced Dr. Phillips with 15 points.

Colonial (16-9) led most of the night at West Orange (18-9) while coming away with a 53-42 win in a matchup of Sentinel Super Six teams. Camryn Patterson led the way with 13 points in the win. Carmen Richardson and Dezmariah Soto each finished with 10 points.

The Grenadiers entered the night at No. 4 in the Super Six rankings. West Orange moved into the No. 6 spot this week after defeating Dr. Phillips for the District 3 title.

Timber Creek, ranked No. 3, defeated Colonial 71-62 last week in the District 4 championship game. The Grenadiers won the first matchup 48-42 on Dec. 10.

Region tournament semifinal games are scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. Admission is $7 per person.

In Class 6A, St. Cloud senior Eno Inyang scored her 2,000th career point in the third quarter of a narrow 59-52 Region 2 home win over Lake Howell (11-10). The Bulldogs (15-6) entered the fourth quarter trailing 45-44. Keegan Brace tallied 25 points for the Silverhawks in the loss.

St. Cloud faces Winter Haven (16-1) in the semis after the Blue Devils made easy work of first-time region participant East River (16-10) by a 66-29 score.

Wekiva (21-3) rolled to a 72-20 home win against Jacksonville Atlantic Coast (9-13) in 6A Region 1. Omaria Gordon led the Mustangs with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Shadaria Smith added 14 points and Aaleiyah Bonner finished with 12 points.

Wekiva hosts a district championship rematch Tuesday against Daytona Beach Mainland (20-2). The Mustangs prevailed in last week’s meeting 69-55. The Bucs won 68-56 at Jacksonville First Coast (7-11) on Thursday.

Windermere High (7-7) and Oak Ridge (14-8) each advanced in 7A Region 2 with lopsided wins. The Wolverines were led by Abigail Crain with 19 points and Delaney Loos with 13 points in a 52-22 win vs. Lake Nona (12-12). Oak Ridge won 69-34 vs. Haines City (8-10).

Lake Highland Prep, the area’s No. 1-ranked team, improved to 15-0 with an 88-17 thrashing of visiting Holiday Anclote (8-16) in Class 4A. The Highlanders host a district final rematch against Eustis (14-6), which won 64-56 at Wesley Chapel (19-5).

Alana Seward led the Panthers with 18 points. Tan Brown scored 16 points and Cerina Rolle added 13 points for Eustis.

Sophomore Hannah Kohn led The Master’s Academy (15-7) with 25 points and 7 rebounds in a 59-37 win against P.K. Yonge (3-6) in Class 3A.

In Class 2A, Foundation Academy (14-7) and Kissimmee City of Life (12-6) advanced to the region semifinal round with convincing efforts.

Foundation overcame a 30-point outburst by Tenaya Bennett during a 55-38 win vs. Deltona Trinity (8-8). Chelsey Bryant led the Lions with 15 points and 5 assists and Avery Michels, a 6th-grader, added 14 points.

Camila DePool scored 20 points and Josie DePool added 13 points for City of Life during a 74-22 win at Palm Bay Covenant Christian (12-5).
