Postseason penalty kicks five days apart in February provided moments of elation and disappointment for Winter Park’s girls soccer team.

The Wildcats ended Oviedo’s streak of six consecutive district championships by winning a 4-3 shootout against the Lions Feb. 11 for the Class 7A District 4 title. The triumph came after Winter Park defeated Hagerty 5-1 in the semifinal round. Oviedo and Hagerty entered district tournament play atop the FHSAA 7A power rankings.

The celebration was short-lived, though, as Winter Park finished in a scoreless tie Feb. 16 against Boone and lost 3-2 on PKs in a regional quarterfinal.

Despite the early playoff exit, the Wildcats finish the 2020-21 season ranked No. 1 in the Sentinel Super Six. Winter Park, which beat Bishop Moore 3-1 early in the season, outscored opposing teams 96 to 17 and registered nine shutouts.

No. 2 Oviedo bounced back from its district final setback to win 5-0 at Boone and reach the 7A region championship game, where the Lions lost 2-1 at reigning state champion St. Johns Bartram Trail, which plays for another title Friday.

Seniors Raisa Lugo and Kyleigh Thelen each entered their final game for Oviedo with 12 goals scored and five assists.

Bishop Moore, ranked No. 3 in the Super Six, reached the 4A state semis after playing the toughest schedule among all area teams, according to MaxPreps. The Hornets’ season ended Friday on penalty kicks at Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons, which plays in a state final this week in DeLand for the third year in a row.

The Geneva School’s unbeaten season ended Friday during an 8-0 loss vs. St. Johns Country Day of Orange Park in a 2A state semifinal. St. Johns has won the past nine small-school state championships since 2012.

Closing out the Super Six this season is No. 4 Clermont East Ridge, No. 5 Timber Creek and No. 6 Boone. Team records listed below are as reported by MaxPreps.
