Wrestling

FHSAA Championships: Mariner’s Christopher Minto brought home a state championship in the 120-pound weight class at the FHSAA Championships in Kisimmee. Minto scored a major decision against Fort Myers wrestler Caleb Massari in the Class 2A final.  

Angel Alverio of Ida Baker came in second at 220 pounds, losing in his championship match to Tristan Middlebrook of Lake Gibson in a 3-1 decision.  

Another Tritons wrestler, Mack Koselke, finished fourth at 120 pounds. Cape Coral’s Richard Albert finished sixth in the 106-pound class.  

In Class 1A, Hunter Eichelberger of Oasis was sixth in the 182-pound division.

Semifinals — 120 pounds: Christopher Minto (Mariner) 46-1 won by fall over Darrell Tabor (Brandon) 34-5 (Fall 4:38).  220: Angel Alverio (Ida Baker) 28-0 won by decision over David Polaski (Niceville) 17-6 (Dec 6-2). 

Third wrestlebacks — 106: Richard Albert (Cape Coral) 36-10 won by major decision over Fredrick Mitchum (Miami Southridge) 13-8 (MD 10-1).  160: Mack Koselke (Mariner) 39-8 won by major decision over Jacob Holland (Braden River) 52-8 (MD 10-0).  

Consolation semifinals — 106: Dominic Nardini (Springstead) 41-3 won by tech fall over Richard Albert (Cape Coral) 36-11 (TF-1.5 4:15 (16-1)).  160: Mack Koselke (Mariner) 39-8 won by decision over Harlan McCandless (Winter Springs) 22-7 (Dec 5-2).

Baseball

Island Coast 10, Ida Baker 0 (5 innings): Jake Mueller was 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI to pace the Gators’ attack. Emilio Gonzalez went 2-for-2, drove in two runs and scored twice. Eddie Boe Rodriguez scored three Island Coast (7-1) runs. Dylan Masters held Ida Baker (3-6) to one hit in five scoreless innings. Island Coast swept the three-game series, holding the Bulldogs scoreless.

Bishop Verot 2, Parrish Community 0: Joseph Hobson hurled a two-hit shutout for the Vikings (5-1, 1-0 District 3A-10), striking out four and issuing no walks. Preston Hall (2-for-4) and Josiah Velasquez drove in the Bishop Verot runs, and Brady Loughren had two hits.

Lemon Bay 15, Oasis 4: Casey Obien drove in two runs for the Sharks (3-4), with Brady Kavanaugh and Kevin Leal adding an RBI each. Five Oasis errors hurt the Sharks’ cause, leading to four Manta Rays runs.

North Fort Myers 15, Cape Coral 3: Justin Corbitt doubled twice, scored and had four RBI as the Red Knights (3-4) completed a three-game sweep. Blake Busbee was 2-for-3 with a triple and drove in three runs, Gary Kamphouse (2-for-3) had two RBI and scored three times, Gavin Hause (3-for-3) scored four times and Aiden Denlinger was 3-for-4.  For the Seahawks (1-5), Orien Powell was 2-for-3 with two RBI.  

Softball

North Fort Myers 7, North Port 6 (9 innings): It took a late rally, then extra innings, for the Red Knights to pull out Friday’s victory. Down 6-3 going to the bottom of the sixth, North scored twice in the sixth and one in the seventh to stay alive. Finally, in the bottom of the ninth, Desirae Devine doubled, then came home on Taylor Roscitti’s walk-off RBI single. Devine scored three times overall. Kendell Wylie had a three-hit night, driving in two runs and scoring twice herself. Kirsten Gnagey tripled and had two RBI. Sydney Morris (4-0) was the winning pitcher for North in relief, going four shutout innings with eight strikeouts while allowing just two runners.

Bishop Verot 7, Estero 1: Victoria Ash struck out 12 Estero batters, allowing one run on four hits and no walks. Katelyn Mohs had two RBI for the Vikings (6-0), and Lillie Layne, Ashley Smallwood and Sophia Miller also drove in runs. Mills and Skiela Green each scored twice.
