Prep roundup: Rattlers flag football keeps rolling

The Belleview flag football team continued its dominant start to the season with a 25-6 road win against Live Oak Suwannee. 

Wednesday's win was the Rattlers' fourth of the season in as many games and they have outscored their opponents 150-6 so far this year. 

Madison Douglass caught a touchdown pass, and on defense, she had three sacks and an interception. Douglass also ran for a one-point conversion.

Tia Dantzler returned a punt for a touchdown and came away with an interception, Sophia Spata had a rushing touchdown, and Hannah Collett ran for a score and had an interception.

"Our defense played lights out again for us," Belleview head coach Jeff Brewer said. "The only score (Suwannee) had was after an interception that gave them the ball at (our) 2-yard line."

At the beginning of play on Wednesday, the Rattlers were ranked No. 5 in the MaxPreps state flag football poll.

GIRLS TENNIS

Forest 6, Trinity Catholic 1: At the College of Central Florida, the Forest girls tennis team won its eighth match in a row with a victory over Trinity Catholic on Wednesday night.

The Wildcats took control of the match by winning all of their singles pairings to improve to 10-1 on the season.

Wednesday's results: SINGLES: 1. Jordyn Mulhern (FHS) defeated Vicky Ortiz, (retired/medical forfeit). 2. Evangeline Ryan (FHS) def. Lizzy Biancully, 8-3. 3. Abby Smallridge (FHS) def. Amelia Christiano, 8-3. 4. Taylor Martinelli (FHS) def. Saylor Buchanan, 8-4. 5. Reigan Robinson (FHS) def. Maren Kimball, 8-5. 

DOUBLES: 1. Ortiz/Biancully (TC) def. Mulhern/Ryan, 8-4. 2. Smallridge Martinelli (FHS) def. Christiano/Buchanan, 8-6.

Up next for Forest is the county-wide MCIAC Tournament on March 25-26 at the Fort King Municipal Tennis Center.

SOFTBALL

Belleview 16, Lake Weir 1 (6 innings): At Lake Weir, the Rattlers reeled off their sixth consecutive win on Wednesday.

Freshman pitcher Isis Howard (1-0) earned her first career win after going four innings with four strikeouts.

Offensively for BHS, Kylah Gardner had an RBI double and Laila Henry had a hit and three runs scored.

Belleview (9-3, 4-0 in District 5-4A) hosts Groveland South Lake on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Before Friday's game, the Rattlers will be doing a Wall of Fame induction to honor five former Belleview softball players. The ceremony starts at 6:45 p.m. at the Belleview softball field.

BASEBALL

West Port 5, Newberry 3: At West Port, Alex White (1-1) earned the win after surrendering one run in 3.2 innings pitched with three strikeouts. 

Cole Renfroe allowed only one run and struck out five in 3.1 innings to pick up the save.

Offensively, Renfroe went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Jayson Yaccarino finished 1 for 2 with one RBI.

West Port 9, Gainesville P.K. Yonge 2: On Tuesday at P.K. Yonge, Jayson Yaccarino (3 for 4, RBI) and Edwin Forty (1 for 3, 3 RBIs) helped power the Wolf Pack offense.

Roybert Gonzalez (1-0) pitched five no-hit innings with four strikeouts to earn the win.

West Port travels to Belleview on Friday for a 7 p.m. first pitch.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Dunnellon 3, Lake Weir 0: At Dunnellon, the Tigers defeated the Hurricanes by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-17.

Robert Chervenack (9 service points, 6 assists, 15 kills, 1 block), Kelvin Alba (10 service points, 21 assists, 6 blocks) and Edwin Contreras (9 service points, 24 assists, 8 kills, 1 block) led the Tigers.

Dunnellon (1-3) plays at Forest on March 22 at 6 p.m.
