The Florida High School Athletic Association has reclassified football teams for the 2021-22 academic year, and five Brevard County programs have new district homes.

Eau Gallie moved up from Class 5A to 6A — a return to its previous home — while Bayside and Holy Trinity dropped. Satellite and Titusville will return to district play from the ranks of the independents.

The Bears will join the Scorpions and Terriers in local District 8-5A, which includes Merritt Island, Palm Bay and Rockledge. The Commodores moved up from that grouping to join Heritage in 7-6A.

Holy Trinity drops from 3A to 2A, where it will be the only Brevard entrant. That leaves Tigers rival MCC in the same situation in 3A.

The FHSAA Board of Directors voted this month to reclassify football teams for next school year only, rather than the two-year classification that is usual. Teams will be reclassified again in a year, when enrollments are expected to stabilize as COVID-19 adjustments lessen.

Schools in classes below 5A will continue to play without districts. They will compile complete schedules on their own, while larger schools will have mandatory district schedules as a base for the 2021 season.
