Brevard notes: Viera, Merritt Island, Satellite, Heritage athletes earn honors

Viera High runner Isabella Babilonia won all-America honors at the Adidas Indoor Track and Field Indoor Nationals.

Babilonia ran the championship girls 5,000 meters race in 17:23.90, placing fourth. The event was last month in Virginia Beach.

The senior is a UCF signee and was the FLORIDA TODAY Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year for 2020. She won conference, district and regional titles in the fall before placing sixth in Class 4A at the state level.

Allison Gerrits also ran at the meet, placing 17th in the girls open two-mile run.

Eight Mustangs lead 12 from Brevard on statewide honor roll

Eight Merritt Island High girls soccer players made the 2021 list for Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Academic. Payton Gibney, Kathryn Glass, Danielle Grenon, Jessica Martin, Madylin Morse, Amaya Quintal, Kyleigh Trout and Karys Verpaele all earned the honor.

Satellite's Diego Fernandez Torres and Oliver Pasque made the list for boys basketball, as did Zak Irvin and Matthew Lopez of Heritage.
