LCS's Carnes named 3A player of the year

The awards keep coming for the state champion Lakeland Christian girls soccer team.

Senior forward Katie Carnes was named the Dairy Farmers Class 3A Girls Soccer Player of the Year on Wednesday, and head coach Jason Streets was named the 3A coach of the year following balloting by a statewide panel of high school girls soccer coaches and prep media representatives.

By winning the 3A balloting, Carnes is a finalist for the 2021 Miss Soccer award, and Streets is a finalist for the Girls Soccer Coach of the Year. The overall winners will be announced after a final round of balloting on March 31.

Carnes, who led LCS with 27 goals and 15 assists, ran away with the 3A balloting finishing with more than twice as many points as the runner-up. Carnes finished with 69 points, and Bolles' Izzy Kimberly was second with 34.

The other player finalists are: Tampa Plant senior Quinn Ryan (7A), who scored 33 goals; Venice senior Kiki Slattery (6A), who scored 26 goals with 18 assists; Lecanto senior Ava Rice (5A), who scored 48 goals with 18 assists; Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons senior Maddie Young, a defender, and Canterbury's Jasmine Perez-Acosta, who scored 42 goals with 20 assists.

Streets also won the 3A coaching balloting by a wide margin. He finished with 92 points, and Delray Beach's American Heritage's Krisztian Mikoczi was second with 45 points. He led the Vikings to a 21-1-1 record and to their first state championship.

The other coaching finalists are: Jen Rodriguez (7A), who led Bartram Trail to a 19-2 record and its second straight state title; Venice's Gary Volyard (6A), whose team went 16-4 and  won a state title; Dave Silverberg (5A), who led Ponte Vedra to a 14-3-5 record and a state title; Cardinal Gibbons' Margo Flack (4A), who won her first state title and finished 12-2-1, and St. John Country Day's Mike Pickett, whose team finished 18-0 and won its 10th straight state title.
