Fort Pierce Central track and field teams sweep St. Lucie County championships

Fort Pierce Central track and field athletes had a big day at the St. Lucie County Championship on Thursday as a total of 12 events were won by Cobra girls and boys on the way to each team taking titles at Lawnwood Stadium in Fort Pierce.

Nobody had a better day than senior Brianna Clayton, who had her hand in four event victories with a sweep of both the 100 and 200 meter dash and was part of the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams for the Cobras.

Fellow senior Auhmya Wilder also turned in an excellent meet, winning the 400 meter dash and took first place in the triple jump for Fort Pierce Central’s girls, who defeated Lincoln Park Academy by nine points in the team standings.  

Greyhound eighth grader Jacey Lane starred in the distance races, taking first in both the 1,600 meter and 3,200 meter run and was a leg of the winning 4x800 relay team for Lincoln Park.

Port St. Lucie junior La’Nia Rogers took home wins in both the 300 hurdles and the high jump for the Jaguars.

Fort Pierce Central's Carlos Claudio bested the field in the 110 hurdles at the St. Lucie County Track and Field Championship held Thursday, March 25, 2021, at Lawnwood Stadium in Fort Pierce.

Fort Pierce Central senior hurdler Carlos Claudio had a clean sweep of the two hurdle races, taking both the 110 and 300 to lead the Cobra boys by Treasure Coast in the team standings.

The Cobras picked up event wins from sophomore Mikoy Holmes in the triple jump, junior Joshua Richter in the 1600 meter run and the 4 x 800 relay team of Fritz Claude, Jabari Aljoe, Jurmain Mitchell and Jalen Elliot taking the top spot for Fort Pierce Central.

Fort Pierce Westwood senior sprinter Elijah Major took top honors in both the 100 and 200 meter dash and was a leg of the Panthers’ winning 4x100 relay team with Mikel Love, Ravon Stanberry and James Monds.

Stanberry also took first place in the long jump for the Panthers, who finished in third as a team.

John Carroll Catholic junior Cody Menke dominated the throwing events on the day, winning both the discus and shot put for the Rams.

Baseball

Martin County 7, Lincoln Park Academy 0: Ryan Chapman went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run as the Tigers (9-2) blanked the Greyhounds. Kyle Verzi had two hits, including a double and the quartet of Luke Lemond, Chapman, Michael Benedict and Kevin Guidoboni combined for a four-hit shutout on the mound for Martin County.

Chase Wilson had a 2-for-2 night for Lincoln Park.

Centennial 9, Fort Pierce Westwood 3: Jacob Suazo went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Hunter Gagnon along with Michael Hunter each had three-hit days to lead the way for the Eagles (9-3). Chris Torres had two doubles and two RBI and Luis Merejo, Jr. had a triple and drove in three runs to support four Centennial pitchers led by Dylan Reinhardt, who threw three innings and struck out four to pick up the victory.

Softball

Martin County 17, Port St. Lucie 2 (4 innings): Allison Jones had two hits, including a triple and drove in three runs and Mary Polak struck out eight over four innings and also added a triple as part of a two-hit night at the plate in the win for the Tigers (8-1). Emily MacMullen had two hits, including a triple and Bayli Legg doubled as part of a two-hit night for Martin County, who had 17 hits as a team.

Jenna Prokopishen went 2-for-3 with a triple and Ciana Cook also had two hits in the loss for Port St. Lucie.

Flag Football

Jensen Beach 20, South Fork 0: Ja’Shya Christie went 15-for-21 and threw for 158 yards and a touchdown and added two rushing touchdowns in the win for the Falcons (4-1). Vanessa Queen totaled 100 all-purpose yards, Lauren Duke had a 40-yard touchdown catch, Naiya Sawtelle had five catches for 56 yards and Angelina Arguelles had five flag pulls to lead Jensen Beach on defense.

Boys Lacrosse

St. Edward’s 19, The Pine School 6: Oscar Lindenthal scored six goals to lead the way for the Pirates (8-3). Brennan Wolfe scored three goals and added four assists, Riker Pratt also scored three goals, Danny Richmond scored two goals and added five assists, Ricky Savage scored two goals, Drew Sternberg, Dylan Redmon and Eli Barin all added a goal apiece and Liam Murphy made six saves in goal for St. Edward’s.

Dylan Markulics and Jack Squier each scored two goals and Tucker Litterick and Tyler Markulics added a goal apiece for the Knights.

Brady Nash had a 2-for-4 night and Jaden Paradoa struck out seven in seven scoreless innings for Treasure Coast.

Girls Lacrosse

South Fork 11, Jupiter 9: Zoe Williams scored five goals to pace the Bulldogs (7-2) in the victory. Katie Hale scored three goals and added an assist, Jenna Hale, Molly O’Donnell and Ashley Stocker netted a goal apiece, Kayla Jones had one assist and Sydnie O’Connor made three saves for South Fork.
