Daytona Beach Mainland High football coach Scott Wilson has stepped down after nearly 11 seasons, multiple Mainland players told the Orlando Sentinel.
Wilson met with players Wednesday and told them of his decision. The Sentinel was unable to reach Wilson or Mainland athletic director Patrick Monahan to confirm the resignation. Wilson will step into more of an administrative role, according to sources.
Wilson took over the Mainland program midway through the 2010 season after former coach John Maronto stepped down. Wilson won his 100th game as the Bucs’ coach last season and his record was 103-31 during his tenure.
Mainland’s girls flag football team is also coached by Wilson, and he will remain in that position. His daughter, Alexa, plays quarterback for the team and the Bucs’ girls are 6-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 1A.
In boys football, WIlson led the Bucs to three Class 6A state semifinal appearances in which they lost to Miami Central twice and Treasure Coast once. The Bucs’ only state title came under Maronto in 2003.
During Wilson’s time at Mainland, he was instrumental in sending players on to the next level, and even to the NFL.
Former Bucs’ star Leonard Williams, who played at USC, was named NFL All-Pro in his second season with the New York Jets and he currently plays for the New York Giants. Wilson also coached safety Ricardo Allen, a Purdue product who signed recently with the Cincinnati Bengals after seven seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. Another player to come through Mainland en route to the NFL was current free agent Jachai Polite, who played at Florida before moving on to the Jets and Los Angeles Rams.
