Woa! Seventy-two Broward and Palm Beach football players earn spots on Class 5A, 4A, 3A All-State football teams

Six dozen Broward and Palm Beach county football players earned spots on FloridaHSFootball.com‘s Class 5A, Class 4A and Class 3A All-State football teams, which were released on Thursday.

In addition, 30 local players were named to the All-State first team in their classifications, and five local players earned superlative awards in their class.

In Class 5A, American Heritage sophomore Mark Fletcher was named the Class 5A Offensive Player of the Year. His teammate, senior James Williams, was named Class 5A Defensive Player of the Year.

Fletcher, the Sun Sentinel’s Broward County small schools player of the year, carried the ball 203 times and rushed for 1,411 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns as the Patriots won the Class 5A title. Williams, the Sun Sentinel’s Broward County small schools defensive player of the year, had 74 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. Williams signed with Miami.

In Class 4A, Cardinal Gibbons senior Brody Palhegyi was named the Overall Player of the Year, and his teammate, junior Mason Thomas, was named Defensive Player of the Year. Additionally, Cardinal Gibbons coach Matt DuBuc was named Class 4A Coach of the Year.

Palhegyi was a first-team All-County selection, finishing the season with a 68 percent completion percentage, 1,214 passing yards and 17 touchdowns. He also ran for 271 yards and two touchdowns en route to the Chiefs’ Class 4A state championship. Palhegyi signed with Tusculum.

Thomas had a breakout year on the Chiefs’ defensive line, earning first-team All-County honors after racking up 43 tackles and a team-best 16 tackles for loss. He also led the team with seven sacks and had one interception that he returned for a touchdown.

In Class 3A, Chaminade-Madonna defensive back Brian Dilworth was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Dilworth, a first-team All-County selection, intercepted seven passes in 10 games. He also had 29 tackles and a sack.

Among Broward County teams, the Patriots, Chiefs and Lions led the way. American Heritage had 12 players selected, including 11 first-teamers. Cardinal Gibbons also had 11 players selected with nine first-teamers. Chaminade had 10 players selected and five first-teamers.

In Palm Beach County, Glades Central paced the other teams with 10 total selections and four first-teamers. American Heritage-Delray had nine players selected.
