Senior South Pittsburg quarterback Kamden Wellington went out with an injured ankle, and that’s when the Pirates turned to the run game. They rushed the ball 42 times for 338 yards to earn a shot at their seventh TSSAA state championship (14th overall finals appearance) by beating Oliver Springs 31-7 on Friday night on the road.
Senior Jamarion Farrior took over at quarterback and ran 17 times for 138 yards and two touchdowns, while sophomore JaMychal Buckner added 12 rushes for 78 yards.
On defense, Pirate sophomore Kadyn Pace had two interceptions. South Pittsburg’s defense has held opponents to only 61 points in 14 games this season.
The Pirates will face McKenzie (13-1), the defending champions for the 1A championship, on Friday at 2 p.m. CT at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga. South Pitt defeated McKinzie for the championship in 2021.
