Mary Persons has unveiled its 2025 football schedule after finding that elusive final non-region opponent in Butler High of Augusta.
Butler will come to the renovated Dan Pitts Stadium on Aug. 29 to replace the Canadian Westminster team that MP hosted last season.
MP was moved into the new 9-team Region 2-AAA last year, which leaves the Dogs playing 8 region games. That only leaves 2 non-region games.
MP will debut the renovated Dan Pitts Stadium against border rival Jackson on Aug. 22 and then play Butler on Aug. 29.
The Dogs open region play at Fayette on Sept. 5, the first of 3 straight road games. MP will play a rare Saturday game the following weekend when it plays at Troup County on Sept. 13. Troup has to share Calloway Stadium with LaGrange so will host on Saturday. That will leave coach Brian Nelson with 13 days to get ready for Upson-Lee, which beat MP for the first time ever last season and finished second in the region.
MP will then host three straight home games in October, and will only have one last road game in the regular season, at defending region champ Sandy Creek, on Oct. 24. The Dogs will close the regular season slate by hosting Spalding.
The Bulldogs suffered their worst season in decades in 2024, going 3-7 after the GHSA forced them to forfeit their first 4 games, 3 of them wins, for using a transfer from Upson-Lee who was later found to be academically ineligible. Upson-Lee’s athletic director, who’s leaving the school, reportedly called the GHSA about the sophomore wide receiver.
MP has rebuilt the visitors side of Dan Pitts Stadium to give more berth between the playing field and the stands. Work has begun on a new field house as part of $17 million in renovations, but it won’t be ready until the 2026 season. While there’s no grass on the field right now, MP is still slated to hold graduation at Dan Pitts Stadium on May 23. MP freshmen began spring football practice on Monday, April 28 and the rest of varsity begins next Monday, May 5.
