Terre Haute South’s Ryan Hescher was a double winner in shot put and discus, and the host Braves won multiple individual events in both boys and girls competition at Monday’s Braves Invitational in high school track and field.

South took first as a team in boys and girls. The Braves boys totaled 118 points, followed by Monrovia at 81, Vincennes Lincoln 43 and Believe Circle City 1. In girls, South totaled 109.6 points to Monrovia’s 101.3, Vincennes Lincoln 21 and Believe Circle City 3.

South’s individual winners included in girls, Cassidy Pettijohn in the 200-meter dash, Shalane Blakey (400), Kennidy Dillion (800), Ava Ham (1,600), Samarra Newburn (100 hurdles), Te’Rah Cooley (300 hurdles), Dez Campbell (shot put), Emeilyah Sands (discus) and the 400- and 800-meter relay teams; in boys, Joseph Vaughn (200), Noah Price (400), Braden Fears (1,600), Josh Morgan (110 hurdles), William Drummond (300 hurdles), Jaylen Wells (high jump), Tyisaac Corbin (long jump), Hescher (shot put and discus) and the 100-, 400- and 800-meter relay teams.

The Braves will return to competition in Thursday’s 5:30 p.m. Big Five meet at Terre Haute North, along with West Vigo, Sullivan, Northview and the host Patriots.

Prep baseball

West Vigo 10, Brown County 0 — At West Vigo, freshman Alan Ramirez struck out 12 batters in five innings Tuesday as the Vikings won a Western Indiana Conference game.

Red-hot Jayce Noblitt was 2 for 4 with three runs and two RBI for the Vikings, while Colton Enyeart was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI. Ramirez and Chad Michael each had a double and Brandon Dailey scored twice.

Now 11-6, 4-2 in the WIC, West Vigo plays Wednesday at Sullivan.

Parke Heritage 6, South Vermillion 2 — At Clinton, the visiting Wolves moved ahead of the Wildcats in the Wabash River Conference with Tuesday’s win.

Parke Heritage is now 9-6, 6-2 in the WRC, and plays a doubleheader Saturday at Seeger. South Vermillion, 8-6 and 5-3, hosts North Central on Thursday.

West Vigo 8, Parke Heritage 1 — At Rockville, Jayce Noblitt and Chad Michael were both 2 for 4, Noblitt scoring twice and Michael driving in two, as the Vikings won a nonconference road game Monday.

Brandon Dailey had a double and Alan Ramirez scored twice and Colton Enyeardt pitched a three-hitter for West Vigo, while Renn Harper and B.T. Luce each had a double for the Wolves.

Prep softball

Clay City 23, South Vermillion 0 — At Clay City, the host Eels’ 15-hit offensive included home runs from Faith Mitchell and Kambryn Rhodes in a nonconference victory over the Wildcats on Monday.

Mitchell drove in four runs and scored four runs, while Rhodes had five RBI and three runs scored. Also for Clay City, Ellie Stoelting doubled, singled and drove in three runs, and Abigale Shearer had three RBI. The Eels also drew 11 walks from South Vermillion pitchers.

Clay City pitchers Lizzy Sinders, Caroline Rexrode and Charli Walters combined for four strikeouts in their five-inning, two-hit shutout performance.

The win gave the Eels a 9-2 record going into Tuesday’s game at Terre Haute North. The loss gave South Vermillion a 5-7 mark going into Tuesday’s home game vs. Parke Heritage.

Linton 6, Bloomington South 5 — At Linton, a three-run, first-inning homer by Laila Gennicks gave the host Miners a lead they never relinquished, and right fielder Livi McKee threw out Bloomington South’s potential game-tying runner at the plate in the seventh inning to finish the thriller on Monday.

Bloomington South retaliated with a single run in the second inning. Then the Miners padded their lead to 6-1 with two runs in the third and single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Then things got tense. The Panthers rallied for four runs in the sixth inning, cuting their deficit to 6-5. But with one out and the bases loaded in the seventh, McKee caught a fly ball in right field and threw out the runner trying to score from third, sealing the Miners’ victory.

Gennicks also had a double and scored three runs. Bella Franklin and Pyper Bland also had RBIs for Linton.

The win gave the Miners a 9-6 record going into Tuesday’s game at Shakamak.

Boys tennis

Newton 6, Robinson 2 — At Newton, Ill., Robinson’s Jameson Poorman and Ian Schmidt won singles matches on Monday in the Maroons’ loss to the host Eagles.

Robinson plays host to Teutopolis at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Staggs tops MVC weekly honors — Indiana State senior pole vaulter Will Staggs won his second straight Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honor Tuesday afternoon after yet another record-breaking performance on the runway.

Staggs cleared the 18-foot mark for the second straight weekend and fifth time in his career with his 18-foot, 1.75-inches clearance at the Jesse Owens Classic, breaking his own program record for a second consecutive meet. Staggs tied for the top clearance in Columbus at 5.53m (18-1.75), a mark which ranks in the top 10 nationally this season, placing second at the meet on misses.

Staggs remains the highest-ranked MVC athlete in any event this season, while his pole vault clearance was the best for a Valley athlete since 2007. His school record-setting mark ranks second in NCAA East qualifying and eighth nationally.
