On the last throw of the men’s shot put and sitting in fourth place, Terre Haute South High School graduate and current University of Wisconsin senior Jason Swarens came through in the clutch Wednesday night at Hayward Field.
Swarens, the No. 1 seed coming in and the reigning Big Ten outdoor champion, heaved the 16-pound metal ball 69 feet, 8 inches to catapult into first place and win his first NCAA championship right before the Tribune-Star’s news deadline.
In the 2024 outdoor nationals, Swarens placed second behind Ole Miss junior Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan, who came in third Wednesday (66-11 1/2) behind Swarens and North Carolina senior Thomas Kitchell (68-0 1/4).
Meanwhile, Indiana State senior Will Staggs placed ninth in the men’s pole vault in the NCAA Division I outdoor track and field national championships Wednesday night at the University of Oregon’s facility.
Staggs started with a 17-foot vault, which he missed his first attempt at before making it the second time.
Staggs then cleared it at 17-5 3/4. He kept improving with each following attempt as the bar got raised higher. However, he missed at 18-1 3/4, then made it on his second attempt to tie his own school record.
Staggs missed all three of his attempts at 18-3 3/4 and that was the end of his night.
ISU sophomore Rachel Mehringer will compete in the preliminary round of the women’s 100 hurdles at 8:08 p.m. EDT Thursday.
