Valley sixth, fifth at home meet
By Chris Strunk
Last Updated: April 12, 2019

The Valley Center High School track team hosted an eight-team invitational April 5.

The boys placed sixth, while the girls were fifth.

Andale won the boys and girls titles.

"Overall, the meet went well," Valley Center coach Troy Emig said. "It was a beautiful day with extremely tough competition. It's a good meet to measure where we currently are and where we need to be."

Individual honors start with Sarah Schaar. Schaar won the two-mile race and placed second in the 1600. Her time in the 3200 was 12:05.40, 22 seconds faster than second-place finisher Jenna Ramsey of Hutchinson. Her time in the 1600 was 5:44.20.

The boys' 4x100-meter relay team — Max Fields, Logan Glidewell, Zach Williams and Larry Russell — won the event in 43.55 seconds, just ahead of Hutchinson.

Kyler Meyer scored points for the boys, placing sixth in both the high jump and the triple jump.

Vincent Vaughn placed sixth in the long jump with 19-4.25.

Williams, who started the season with a jump of 21-9 at Andale, failed to make a mark in the Valley Center meet, scratching all three attempts.

Williams rebounded to place second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.86, edged out by Newton's Jerik Ochoa, who recorded a 14.85.

Wilson placed second in the 100-meter dash with 11.14 and second in the 200 with 23.17. Newton's Davian Vigil won both races.

Fields scored points in the 100 with a fifth-place finish in 11.50.

Stephen Lybarger placed seventh in the 1600 with 5:00.02.

In the throwing events, Dale Hatfield placed sixth in the shot put with 43-2 and eighth in the discus with 131-6.5.

Dylan Bastian also scored points in the field events, taking sixth in the javelin with 137-9.

The boys' 4x800-meter relay team placed sixth.

Alli Burke cleared 8-feet, 6 inches to take sixth in the pole vault. Andale's Jayden Cates jumped 11-6 for the title. Burke later went to the track, where she sprinted to a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.65.

Kenisa Meyer put points on the board as well. She placed third in the long jump with 17-5.25 and second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.5 seconds, less than half a second slower than first-place finisher Maggie Remsberg of Newton.

Lydia Smith was fifth in the 100 hurdles with 16.68.

Libby Schurle placed fifth in the javelin with 104-6. The winning throw was 138-8 by Andale's Katelyn Fairchild.

Jalea Hoddy placed second in the 800-meter run with 2:34.33.

Kait McDonald was fourth in the 200 with 28.40.

The girls' 4x800-meter relay team and the 4x100 each placed third.

Next up for the Hornets is Aug. 12 at Augusta and Aug. 18 at Heights.
