For the second consecutive season, the Veritas baseball team will come home with a state title.

VHS cruised to a 14-4 victory over Wichita Home School Saturday afternoon in St. Mary’s during the championship game of the KCAA state tournament. It is the third such title for the Eagles in their program’s brief history, including second in a row.

It was a one-run game before Veritas poured in six runs in the bottom of the fifth to claim control of the contest. Tucker Flory led the team with five RBIs on three hits, which included a home run. Levi Hawkins and Jackson Rau both clubbed a double.

Six of the team’s nine hitters tallied at least one hit. Rau was one of two players to record multiple hits for the Eagles. Rau also gave up three earned runs off three hits over five innings of work. He whiffed 10 batters and walked five. Will Bartkoski threw a shutout inning in relief with two strikeouts.

FSHS softball sweeps Lansing

Free State’s softball team swept Lansing Saturday afternoon during a doubleheader at FSHS.

In the first game, sophomore Tatum Clopton tossed a no-hitter to lead the Firebirds to a 7-0 win. Clopton walked one batter, which prevented her from notching her fourth perfect game of the year. She struck out 18 batters in the win, while sophomore Sara Roszak went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Roszak clubbed her fifth homer of the year to go along with one double and one single.

Kay Lee Richardson was the winning pitcher in the second contest, in which FSHS needed just six innings to net a 12-2 win over Lansing. Georgia Rea went 3-for-4, finishing a homer shy of a cycle. Maci Miles posted a a 3-for-4 clip at the plate with three RBIs. Roszak also went 3-for-4 with two doubles.

Free State (17-2) will play host to Shawnee Mission East at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

City track standouts net gold medals

Both Lawrence High and Free State were in action Friday at the Shawnee Mission North Relays.

LHS girls posted the highest finish of the four teams, claiming third with 67 points. The Lions actually finished two points shy of event winner Mill Valley. Free State girls finished in a tie for 10th. In the boys competition, Free State took 13th and Lawrence ended up in a tie for 26th.

Still, plenty of individuals ended up with first-place finishes in the highly-competitive meet.

Free State’s Auna Childress won long jump (18-foot-3.5) and triple jump (39-foot-5.5) in the girls competition. Josie Hickerson clinched first in pole vault (12-foot-0), while Amaya Harris won javelin (122-foot-0) for Lawrence. LHS also won the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 4:05 by Ozi Ajekwu, Asjah Harris, Evann Seratte and Hannah Stewart.

On the boys side, Free State’s relay team of Brock Cordova, Ethan Sharp, Grant Holmes and Jack Keathley-Helms won the 4×800-meter relay with a time of 8:17.2.

BSA tennis takes 2nd

The Bishop Seabury boys tennis team finished as a runner-up in its regional meet Friday afternoon.

In the process, four different players punched their ticket to the 3-2-1A state tennis tournament. Grayson Rader placed third in the single bracket, while Peter Westbrook came home with a fifth-place finish. Ian Hannah and Diego Klish notched third in the double bracket.

The state tournament is slated to take place at the Prairie Village-Harmon Park Tennis Complex next weekend.

Seahawks place 5th

Both Bishop Seabury track and field teams placed fifth at the Jefferson County North Invitational Friday night.

The girls team scored 21 points, which included a pair of third-place finishes. Anna Johnson, Darby Harris, Hannah Motsinger, Summer Hartzler clocked a 58.23 to take third in the 4×100-meter relay. Harris also placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 3:16.70.

On the boys side, BSA won three different events and notched a third-place finish as well. Henry Nelson placed first in the 1,600-meter run (4:44.80), 800-meter run (2:13.91) and 3,200-meter run (10:17.65). Harrison Hartzler ran a 53.89 to take third in the 400-meter run.

BSA soccer drops hard-fought match

Once again, the Bishop Seabury girls soccer team posted a resilient effort even though it played without a full squad.

Despite only fielding nine players, the Seahawks held a 3-3 tie with 15 minutes remaining before the wheels eventually fell off. Olathe Christian Heritage scored five goals down the stretch to hand BSA an 8-4 loss Saturday morning.

Summer Hartzler produced a hat trick for the Seahawks, the first of her career. Emily Heinz notched the other score, as she now has 23 goals in only nine matches. As a team, Bishop Seabury set a program record for most goals in a season.

BSA will travel to Wyandotte on Tuesday.
