Spartans hold on for 34-31 road win at Gibson Southern

South Warren senior quarterback Bryce Button led the Spartans to a fourth-quarter 34-31 comeback win against host Gibson Southern (Indiana) on Friday night in Fort Branch, Indiana.

Down 24-14 at halftime, the Spartans rallied with a pair of touchdown passes from Button to Colton Veltkamp. The first, a 6-yarder, got South within three at 27-24 with 6:06 left in the third quarter. Button found Veltkamp again on a 38-yard TD strike to give the Spartans their first lead at 27-24 with 9:01 left to play.

Gibson Southern answered with a touchdown to retake the lead, but Button’s 7-yard touchdown run put the Spartans ahead 34-31 with 31 seconds left and South Warren blocked a 54-yard field goal attempt to preserve the win.

Button, an Eastern Michigan commit, also had a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and connected with Jake Carter on a 30-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

South Warren (4-0) hosts Louisville DuPont Manual this coming Friday.

Bowling Green 49, Apollo 14

Bowling Green quarterback Deuce Bailey passed for six touchdowns to pace visiting Bowling Green to a 49-14 win against Apollo on Friday night.

Bailey, a Missouri State commit, got the Purples rolling with a 28-yard touchdown strike Jaxen Smith to knot the score at 7 in the first quarter. Less than three minutes later, Bailey connected with Montravion Graham on a 19-yard touchdown to give Bowling Green (3-1) a lead it would hold the rest of the night.

A 43-yard screen pass from Bailey to Trevy Barber put the Purples up 21-7, then Bailey found Christopher Sweeney for a 30-yard touchdown strike on the last play of the first half to boost the lead to 28-7.

Bailey and Barber hooked up again in the second half on a 37-yard touchdown play, then Sweeney hauled in a 60-yard touchdown catch from Bailey. Graham wrapped up the Purples’ scoring with a 9-yard touchdown run.

Bowling Green visits Central Hardin this coming Friday.

Russellville 33, Trigg County 17

Hunter Hallman and JaCoveon Temple-Dickerson hooked up for a pair of touchdown passes as host Russellville beat Trigg County 33-17 for the Panthers’ first win of the season.

Hallman was 9 of 14 passing for 207 yards and two touchdowns. Temple-Dickerson had four catches for 130 yards and a pair of TDs.

Jamarion Gardner added 107 rushing yards and a touchdown, and Octavious McKeage also had a rushing touchdown in the win.

Jerius Coleman had a team-high nine tackles, Tiron Garvin forced a fumble and Cadence Bertram and Temple-Dickerson each recovered a fumble for the Panthers.

Russellville (1-3) hosts Franklin-Simpson this coming Friday.

Barren County 21, Monroe County 15

Host Barren County stayed unbeaten with a 21-15 win against Monroe County on Friday.

Trojans quarterback Tate Spillman got the scoring started with a 77-yard touchdown pass to Daylan Thomas, then later in the first quarter connected with Zabrian Ward on a touchdown pass.

Kody Kearney’s 2-yard touchdown run put Barren County (4-0) up 21-6 with 6:07 left in the first half, and the Trojans held a 21-12 halftime lead. Monroe County managed a field goal in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Barren County hosts crosstown rival Glasgow this coming Friday.

Grayson County 35, Butler County 29

Butler County quarterback Garrett Phelps passed for a pair of touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough in the Bears’ 35-29 loss to Grayson County on Friday.

Lonnie Phelps’ 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter got the scoring started for Butler County, which took a 15-11 lead on a Kellen Meredith 26-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Grayson County answered with a pair of touchdowns, but Phelps found Cainan Vince on a 26-yard touchdown pass right before halftime to get the Bears within three points.

The Cougars pushed their lead back out to 32-22 before Phelps struck again with a 61-yard touchdown strike to Meredith early in the fourth, but that was as close as the Bears got the rest of the way. Butler County (0-4) hosts Hart County this coming Friday.{&end}
