Owensboro got a triple from Elli Embry, a triple from Hayley Sikes, and a game-winning single from Taylor Sowders in the bottom of the seventh to finish a 3-run rally to drop Owensboro Catholic 7-6 on Wednesday.
That was the same score as OHS beat Apollo by Tuesday night, again at Jack C. Fisher Park. Owensboro’s 7-6 win over Apollo broke the 11-year losing streak in the 9th District.
“We’ve got a special group,” OHS coach Quincy Moorman said. “We talked to the girls during speed and agility back in the fall and early winter, and we felt like we had a special group. We lost three seniors, had a couple of transfers, ended up losing eight off the team from last year. But this group, they are resilient, they don’t fold, they don’t feel the pressure.
“The bottom of our lineup has carried us the last couple of games. The bottom has come through in both these games.”
Embry was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and she had two triples for OHS. Sikes also had a triple and was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Ayrish Barksdale was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Alyssa Rhineburger and Kaysi Burden each had doubles for OHS. Rhineburger picked up the pitching win, giving up six hits, six runs, striking out three and walking two in seven innings.
“The team is closer than it ever has been,” Embry said. “Right now it’s about the team in general. We’re just here to help each other, cheer each other on. I feel like I’ve been struggling, but tonight I built up some confidence at the plate.”
Owensboro had 12 hits and committed three errors. Owensboro went to 9-7 on the season.
Owensboro Catholic scored two runs in the first inning, and another run in each of the next three innings, along with the top of the seventh. Catholic managed six hits.
Lily Logsdon was 2-for-3 to lead the Lady Aces. Catholic is 6-11 on the season. Gracie Dukate had a double and a run scored. Hannah Tignor had two RBIs on sacrifice flies. Tyranda Stuart and Harper Latham each scored two runs for Catholic.
Railey Scott took the loss for Catholic, and she had six strikeouts and four walks.
“The message to the girls was we weren’t playing a full game in the last week,” Catholic coach Jeremy Phelps said. “When we got behind we laid down. Today I saw that fire out of them again, we played all seven innings.
“Owensboro got the timely hits.”
