St Louis’ Martin Lopez at 112 pounds defeated Ithaca’s Martin Wymer 6-2, and Clayton Howd (171) defeated Seth Capen 3-2 for the Sharks.

Holden Lacross (103), Cameron Rios (119), Jordan Crook (125), Logan Seeley (130), Jackson Miller (135), Jed Abbott (145), Jon Mikey (152), Hunter Hrabal (160) and Logan Wilson (189) all secured pins.

Ithaca’s Josh Capen (215) defeated Trevor Gruett 8-4, and Jared Evers (285) defeated Jake Lonergan 2-1 in overtime. Derek Tood (140) recorded a major decision by defeating Emilio Bailey 11-2.

“Martin got the ball rolling for us and we went on a quick winning streak and put the match out of hand,” St Louis coach Kevin Kuhn said. “Our lower weights are doing it for us when our bigger guys aren’t. Our lower weights went out and did their job.”

“Today’s match was a microcosm of our year,” Ithaca coach Daryl Dawe said. “We’re a young team who’s still figuring out how to win close matches. We win the matches we should win, but in the close matches we just can’t quite get over the hump. We’re just kind of learning and going through our growing pains.

“We have to shake this off quickly, no time to dwell on it. We gave it our best shot, but this weekend’s Tri-Valley Conference championship is a big tournament for tournament seeding in districts, which is our real focus. Conferences are nice, but we want to do well at the end of the year and we can really help ourselves this weekend.”
