CROSS COUNTRY Biloxi, D’Iberville claim team championships

BILOXI — The team championships for the Biloxi Cross Country Invitational couldn’t have been any closer on Saturday morning.

D’Iberville’s girls team accumulated 65 points, one point ahead of runner-up Long Beach’s total of 66, with Biloxi finishing third at 92. In the boys race, however, Long Beach and Biloxi each finished with 72 points atop the standings, but Biloxi gained the team championship because its sixth runner, Jacob Broussard, was 23rd overall while Long Beach’s sixth runner, Brad Williams, placed 32nd.

“You tell the kids, ‘Pass somebody at the finish line and it will pay off,’” Biloxi coach William Harper said.

Long Beach’s Brandon Troub was the overall winner, covering the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 34 seconds.

Troub finished four seconds ahead of runner-up Jordan Travis of Poplarville, followed by Harrison Central’s Josh Murphy, Gulfport’s Craig Johnson and Long Beach’s J.J. Townsend.

“I just kept pushing it,” Troub said. “I stayed in the front pack and moved in the front about halfway through the race.”

Travis, whose older brother, Phillip, was seventh overall, couldn’t make up any ground after the runners came into the football stadium for the final 300 yards.

“I kind of cramped up at the one-mile mark and (Troub) passed me. I just tried to stay with him,” Travis said.

In the girls race, West Harrison’s Micayla Everett entered the football stadium about 20 yards in front of the first pack and cruised to victory with a time of 17 minutes, 1 second for the 2.6-mile course. D’Iberville’s Haley Green, an eighth grader, was second overall with a time of 17:08, followed by Vancleave’s Meredith Johnson, Gulfport’s Lindsey Rayborn and Biloxi’s Caitlyn Andrews.

“It was pretty smooth,” Everett said. “I was in probably about 10th place at the mile mark and starting picking off one of them at a time. About 400 yards (from the finish), I passed the last two girls and said to myself, ‘They’re not going in back in front of me.’”

Green combined with teammates Petka Bruton (12th), Brianna Potter (16th), Sara Lerch (20th) and Cassandra Morgan (22nd) for the team title for D’Iberville.

Scoring for the Biloxi boys’ team were Daniel Pratt (8th), Kody Clark (10th), Collin Manuel (14th), Brennan Hilton (18th) and Jeremy Landis (22nd).

Long Beach’s quintet included Troub, the overall winner, Townsend, William Kelly (13th), Josh Fouasnon (25th) and Bailey Darden (28th).

Biloxi’s girls finished third in the team standings with 92 points, followed by Vancleave (116) and Gulfport (141). Long Beach was led by Rachel Fouasnon’s 10th-place finish.

In the boys’ standings, Harrison Central was third (74 points), followed by Gulfport (90) and D’Iberville (134).
