Bodin leads Lady Irish victory

OCEAN SPRINGS — Going into Thursday’s Ocean Springs Greyhounds Invitational at Gulf Islands National Seashore, Katie Bodin figured she needed a good race.

The St. Patrick High School junior got it.

Bodin ran away from the field to win the individual title in the cross country race and her victory led the Lady Fighting Irish to the team title on a great day to run at the picturesque park.

“It was much needed,” said Bodin, who finished the 2.5 mile course in 15 minutes, 30 seconds. “It has been a rough season. It was a much needed win and it feels awesome.”

The Lady Irish dominated the top of the field with 31 points, followed by Oak Grove (51 points) and Ocean Springs (84). Behind Bodin, twin sister Emily Bodin was fourth and SPHS’s Kaylyn Bellais fifth.

“It was a good effort,” St. Patrick coach Tim McDaniel said. “We’ve been working hard and it’s starting to pay off. We’ve won three of the last four state championships and we’re starting to get there.”

Oak Grove’s Chad Moore easily won the boys individual title with a time of 17 minutes, 29 seconds in the 5K run through the woodsy course. Sophomore Daniel Carter, of Ocean Springs, was second with a time of 18:41.

Anthony Stricker of Oak Grove was third, Daniel Prat of Biloxi fourth and Josh Murphy of Harrison Central fifth.

“I took out pretty quick,” Moore said of his fast start on a flat field. “I ran the first mile in 4:55 and then was at about 9:58 at about two miles.

“It’s a flat course, but pretty woodsy with many obstacles. I enjoyed the race.”

“We’re getting stronger,” Oak Grove coach Robin Ryder said. “We’re really starting to improve as a boys team.”

Ocean Springs’ Carter had a good effort.

“I started near the back and had to work my way up,” Carter said. “I felt pretty good.”

Ocean Springs coach Tim Sayers was pleased.

“He’s a young kid and an all-stater last year,” Sayers said. “He’s been fighting through injuries all year, but he’s getting better.”

For the Lady Greyhounds, Jade Kindsvater finished behind Bodin to take second overall.

“It’s my best finish all year,” said Kindsvater, who is just an eighth-grader. “I started slow, but it went by fast after that. I’m happy I finished in second.”
