Dan Fowler

Saucon Valley High School graduate Dan Fowler swept the individual awards presented by the Eastern University men's tennis team this spring.

Fowler, a junior who transferred after two stellar seasons at Northampton Community College, played No. 1 singles for Eastern and finished with an 8-5 record. He was 3-3 in Freedom Conference matches with all three losses coming to players on the all-conference first team.

Fowler was selected to the All-Freedom Conference second team. He also was voted Eastern's most valuable player and academic MVP for his team-best grade point average. The Eagles finished 6-7 and return five of six starters, led by Fowler, for the 2014 season.

Because of an injury, Warren Hills' Joe Bamford missed what was to be his first season with the Monmouth baseball team in 2012 after transferring from Northampton CC. Bamford returned in 2013 with a vengeance. The outfielder posted the team's second-best batting average at .307 and contributed seven doubles, one triple, one home run, 27 RBIs and 24 runs for the Hawks (30-24-1 overall, 19-11-1 Northeast Conference).

Bamford's freshman teammate at Monmouth, left-handed pitcher Anthony Ciavarella of Phillipsburg, was named to the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association All-Rookie team. Ciavarella, the 2012 Express-Times Player of the Year, was used primarily as a midweek starter. He appeared in nine games with six starts and fashioned a 3-1 record with a 6.25 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 31 2/3 innings. Matt Reynolds of Hackettstown pitched in one game for Monmouth.

Outfielder Shane Siebler of Nazareth and shortstop Brett Bittiger of Pius X each appeared in 16 games for Fairleigh Dickinson's baseball team before having their seasons curtailed by injury. Siebler batted .255 with four RBIs and Bittiger hit .244 with four RBIs.

Jay Maletz of Pius X played in 45 games with 38 starts at first base for Coppin State (18-33). Maletz batted .150 with 12 runs and seven RBIs.

Another Pius X product, Connor Breslin, started 46 of 47 games at third base for Maryland Eastern Shore (8-45). Breslin hit .225 with 10 runs, five doubles and nine RBIs.

Bethlehem Catholic's Matt Bahnick played in 56 games for Tallahassee Junior College after transferring from East Stroudsburg University. The outfielder batted .286 with three home runs, 41 RBIs and 34 runs.

Shane Simpkins of Notre Dame pitched in 13 games in his first season with Louisburg College. Simpkins was used primarily in short relief and went 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings.

Easton's David Hightower capped his track and field career at Rider by sharing the school's Athlete of the Month award for May. The senior earned All-East honors and qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the 110-meter high hurdles. Hightower broke a 25-year-old school record when he ran 13.93 seconds in the East Regional preliminaries. He also won the 110 hurdles at the MAAC Championships in a meet record time.
