ALIQUIPPA — Friday night’s football game between Aliquippa and Belle Vernon has been called due to excessive lightning in the area.

With 7:03 remaining in the first quarter, officials called a lightning delay due to strikes in the area. After over an hour delay, play resumed for five more minutes before the game was delayed once again with 1:29 remaining in the first quarter due to more lightning in the Aliquippa area.

Aliquippa running back Tiqwai Hayes (23) runs up the middle of the field as Belle Vernon's Kole Doppelheuer (1) looks to make a tackle during the Leopards and Quips Week 1 lightning shortened matchup at Heinz Field Friday night.

The Quips led 12-0 after just over 10 minutes of action. Qalil Goode started things off for Aliquippa with an interception on Belle Vernon’s first drive of the game.

The Quips took advantage of the great field position as Tiqwai Hayes plunged in from two yards out to give Aliquippa the first score of the game.

Following a muffed punt that was recovered by Aliquippa, Sa’Nir Brooks rushed in from 16 yards out for the touchdown before the game was stopped and cancelled.

Friday night’s game is scored as a no contest and will not be rescheduled.
