STATE COLLEGE — Bradford junior Payten Leet picked the perfect time to play her best golf of the season.
Leet followed up Monday’s opening round 78 with a 74 in the second and final round to finish with a two-day total of 152 (+8) to finish in 14th place in the PIAA Class 3A golf championships at Penn State. She had started the day in 19th place.
Leet had a pair of birdies in her final round, shooting the front nine in 36 and the back nine in 38. She also had 13 pars.
“I had good chipping today along with my excellent drives contributed to my career low score of 74,” Leet said. “I corrected a lot of mistakes from yesterday’s round. I will be working even harder for next season to try to move up the leaderboard. This was a great experience and I was happy to play well.”
Coach Travis Faulkner echoed those sentiments.
“She finished three shots from a medal,” Faulkner noted. “Payten birdied hole No. 2 after hitting in the fairway bunker. She made a long putt. This was a great round of golf for Payten. She used some clutch putts and amazing drives to shoot low.”
Mya Morgan of Elizabeth Forward won the state title with a two-day total of 143 (-1).
Madison Koshko of St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy won the Class 2A title with a score of 140 (-4). Karns City’s Chloe Fritch, the District 9 champion, finishg in a tie for ninth (156). After shooing a 93 on Monday, Oswayo Valley’s Rylee Thompson was three shots better on Tuesday with a 90 to finish in a tie for 27th.
Nick Werner of Wyoming Seminary won the title with a score of 138 (-6) won the Class 2A boys title. Clarion’s Kameron Kerle was the top District 9 finisher in a tie for 16th (149/+5).
Smethport’s Levi Howard sizzled in the final round. After shooting 86 on Monday, Howard came back with a 77 to finish in 54th place. Howard had a pair of birdies in his final round.
Carson Kittsley had a two-day total of 136 (-8) to win the Class 3A boys title. Punxsutawney’s Evan Presloid finished in a tie for 58th (160/+16).
