Meadville Police Department is filing charges against seven people — both adults and underage teens — for Friday night’s brawl at the Meadville versus Uniontown Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) basketball playoff game at Meadville Area Senior High School.
Charges are being filed this afternoon against three individuals from Uniontown and four from Meadville including some players each team, according to Meadville Police Chief Michael Stefanucci.
Reginald Grooms, 44, of Uniontown is being charged with one count each of misdemeanor simple assault and misdemeanor disorderly conduct plus a summary count of harassment, he said.
Notorious Grooms, 18, of Uniontown and a 16-year-old boy from Uniontown each are being charged with a summary level count of disorderly conduct, Stefanucci said. Both the younger Grooms and the 16-year-old are members of Uniontown's basketball team, Stefanucci confirmed.
Stefanucci could not confirm if and how the elder and younger Grooms may be related, but did confirm they share the same residential address in Uniontown.
The four people from Meadville being charged are two adults and two underage teens — including a member of Meadville's team.
Malik Wilson, 25, and Joseph Chabot, 37, both of Meadville. Each are being charged with a summary level count of disorderly conduct.
One of the teens — age 16 and a member of Meadville's basketball team — is being charged with one count each of misdemeanor simple assault and misdemeanor disorderly conduct plus a summary count of harassment. The multiple charges are due to the Meadville player going into the spectator stands, Stefanucci said.
The second Meadville teen — also age 16 and a student who was a game spectator — is being charged with a summary count level count of disorderly conduct, Stefanucci said.
On Monday, Stefanucci said he expected charges to be filed in connection with the incident and had anticipated less than 10 people to be charged.
The Bulldogs were leading 63-55 with 3:12 left to play when a fight broke out in the stands and spilled onto the floor. The remainder of the game was called off and Meadville named the winner.
However, on Monday, the PIAA declared Friday’s game between Meadville and Uniontown as a double forfeit, which ended Meadville’s season.
