All eyes were on the Tennessee Titans' No.1 overall pick Thursday night in Green Bay.
The former Miami quarterback Cam Ward heard his name called and then walked across the stage to receive his first NFL jersey from commissioner Roger Goodell.
"It's been good, just living out my dream ever since I've been a kid," says Ward. "I'm so happy to be in this moment right now, and it's everything I expected out of myself. I prayed about it, God answered, and now I just plan on doing my due diligence."
The West Columbia, Texas, native was overlooked in high school and did not receive a single scholarship to an FBS school. His only offer was from the University of Incarnate Word, a small private university in San Antonio. Ward says that was the start of his journey, but even then, he knew he could be special one day.
"Since I was a kid, I always knew I was going to go pro in something," says Ward. "I always had big dreams, and I never let anything get to me. I just wanted to prove myself right at the end of the day, and I ended up doing that."
This is Ward's first true visit to Nashville. He says the only time he has been to the city was for his 30-visit this spring with the Titans. He didn't get a chance to explore Nashville, and says he's looking forward to bass finishing and finding himself a new home.
While Ward was overlooked coming out of high school, he will certainly have a target on his back as the No.1 overall selection. However, pressure is something he's learned to manage on his own.
"I don't think there's any pressure, I don't really understand it in my opinion," says Ward. "I play football at the end of the day. I try to win games for my teammates, and I think football is a way for me to express myself."
Day two of the NFL Draft kicks off at 6 p.m. CST. The Titans have the No.35 pick overall and six more picks remaining on day three.
