The DeAndre Hopkins trade between Titans and Chiefs is complete

Midway through a difficult 2024 season, the Tennessee Titans made the wise decision to flip aging wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a conditional 2025 fifth-round selection that could have become a fourth rounder had Hopkins met certain incentives.

The incentives pertained to Kansas City reaching Super Bowl LIX, and required Hopkins to play 60% of snaps as a Chief. Tennessee also paid Hopkins $2.5 million to help finalize the deal.

Well, Hopkins failed to meet those incentives despite the Chiefs advancing to the Super Bowl. He more often than not played fewer than 50 percent of offensive snaps after arriving in KC. Hopkins did not have a single 100-yard performance for the Chiefs.

As a result, the Titans settled for the original 2025 fifth-round compensation, which developed into the No. 167 selection.

Even though the Titans didn’t receive the upgraded fourth-round pick they originally hoped for, they surely have zero regrets over this trade. They now have an affordable rookie they hope will develop into an eventual starter on a four-year contract.

Meanwhile, Hopkins, who was on an expiring deal, failed to help the Chiefs win the Super Bowl. Given the direction of the offseason, the Titans probably wouldn’t have had interest in re-signing Hopkins, who decided to reunite with Derrick Henry by signing with the Baltimore Ravens.
