UT Vols: Pruitt says transfer Deangelo Gibbs can play 'either side of the ball'

Tennessee picked through Georgia's cupboard again to make an addition to its program.

The Vols added Bulldogs transfer Deangelo Gibbs,Tennessee announced on Friday.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Gibbs signed with Georgia as a four-star safety from Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga. He played as a reserve in 2017 and '18 before leaving the team before this year's Sugar Bowl.

“Deangelo is a guy that I knew, and our staff knew in recruiting when he was coming out of high school,” UT coach Jeremy Pruitt said in a school release. “He’s a guy that can play on either side of the ball. He’s very tough and has unique ball skills. He’s a very instinctive player, and he has size and speed. We are happy to have him at Tennessee.”

Gibbs will have to sit out the 2019 season because of NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Pruitt recently named Jim Chaney as Tennessee's offensive coordinator. Chaney had spent the past three seasons in the same role for Georgia.

Gibbs, in a tweet on Friday, thanked Georgia's fans, coaches and his teammates and looked ahead to his future with the Vols.

"Life takes us on many different journeys," Gibbs wrote, "and I'm (grateful) for every lesson learned to this point. I am excited and I look forward to the path that has (led) me to my present destination. ... With that being said, I am 100% committed to giving everything I have to #VolNation."
