Lady Wildcats need another win over HSHS

RED BOILING SPRINGS -- The Monterey High softball team needs another win today over Hermitage Springs High in order to advance to the District 7-A Tournament championship game and earn a region berth.

This comes after the Lady Wildcats fell 8-2 to top-seed and tournament-host Red Boiling Springs on Wednesday.

Today's loser's bracket final began at 1 p.m.

MHS managed just two hits in the loss to RBSHS, going down 8-0 before scoring two runs in its final at-bat.

MHS coach Susan Kirkpatrick has faith her team can emerge a district champion.

"Our girls played with a lot of heart, but it was just one of those days when we couldn't get the bats going," said Kirkpatrick. "We just need to focus on today's game and claw our way into the championship game.

"We can still win it all. We just need to focus on one game at a time."

Brooke Osborne started the game, and swapped time on the mound with Kayla Garrison.

The Lady Wildcats scored in the seventh as Jamie Papi walked and Jade Looper reached on an error, with Papi scoring the first run on a Garrison single and Looper later scoring the second run.

MHS faces HSHS after it fought its way through the loser's bracket after losing to Monterey in the first round. HSHS took a 16-1 win over Pickett County and a 12-5 win over Celina to eliminate those teams.

The winner of the HSHS/MHS game heads to the championship game at 3 p.m. versus Red Boiling, and if RBSHS wins, it will be the champion. Should it lose, a second game will be played.

Both teams in the final make region competition, which begins with semifinals on Monday.
