SAS, Baylor girls in state tourney

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The St. Andrew's-Sewanee girls' tennis team was hungry. The Lady Mountain Lions were restless and ready to play.

The Lady Lions, who had to wait two and a half hours for St. Mary's Episcopal to arrive due to a sinkhole on Interstate 24, pounced on the visitors, claiming a 5-2 victory to advance to the Division II-A state tournament.

Sisters Sadie, Avery and Michaela Shackelford all had victories for St. Andrew's-Sewanee (12-3), which advanced to its third consecutive state tournament. Sadie and Avery also combined for a win in doubles, and their sister and Nikki Johnston won together to seal the victory.

"I thought we played well," SAS coach Kelley Black said. "We were fired up after the long warm-up and ready to take care of business."

* Division II-AA: Baylor's girls defeated St. Benedict's 7-0 to earn a spot in the Division II-AA state tournament.

Samantha Caswell, Erika Marschall, Sarah Berchuck, Harper Caswell, Katie Thornton and Maggie Crumbliss all had singles victories for the Lady Red Raiders.
